    Nicks' Career ended (Possibly)

Sydney utility Matthews Nicks may not be so lucky, with his football future hanging in the balance due to a knee-joint fracture.

The 165-game veteran, a Swans life member, told sydneyswans.com.au the injury may force him into premature retirement, although he has not yet made a decision.

"The injury - a bone stress fracture and a split in the surface area above his left knee cartilage - is one of those things that built up over time and I guess playing for 11-years put so much pressure on my knee that it finally gave away, and at the worse possible moment," the 30-year-old said.

    ....
    ..
"I have not made a decision about my future yet," an adamant Nicks said.

"If I can come back and make a real difference towards to end of this year then I would love to play on, but if I can't then I won't be a burden, I will make my decision whether it is time for me to go and make room for someone else to step in.

    .......
    ..

    ......"

So as the AFL world sits up and take notice of the high-flying Sydney Swans, spare a thought for two of their elder statesmen suffering knee fractures in Nicks and Stuart Maxfield, as they do everything in their power to ensure their careers, like the footy, is back in their hands.
Couldn't have come at a worse time for Nicks, but I guess he was gone either way.

      Poor Nicksy
I'm sure he'll definately be hanging around the club in some sort of form when he does retire. (Aftermatch MC King?)

Sounds almost identical to Stewie's injury.

And his future looks almost identical too.

That's heart breaking. I asked him about it on Sunday night and he said he was back running again and thought he'd be right in a week or so. He seemed really keen to be back in the team.

If he does stop playing, he'd be perfect for some MC role. He really is a very funny guy. While questioning Willo at the aftermatch on Sunday, Willo's phone rang, he looked and said "it's my wife". Nicksy kindly said he'd take the phone while Willo finished answering a question. He did and his first words were "what are you wearing?" We all broke up while Willo, playing straight man started repeating "just hang up dear".

He'd just been giving Nicksy a hard time about still living with a bunch of footballers while he was married with kids and all.

Sad to think his playing days may be over.

I like Matthew Nicks. Particularly when he tore apart Phil Matera in the 2004 final.

I think the Swans should financially encourage players like Matthew Nicks (who are probably too old to find another AFL club or try their luck in the SANFL) to captain-coach a year or two in the ACTFL. It'd be a way of improving the standard of football that our reserves enjoy, an introduction to coaching for those interested, ease them into life after the big time and possibly boost the game in NSW's.

                      Great idea.

Nicks was touted as a future captain once upon a time, so it's tragic how his career has petered out. The ACTFL solution might be a nice win/win for both parties.

I'd pay Matty Nicks to MC any function of mine!

He is my fav player despite the decline in his pace and influence on the pitch. It is shame that he may finish his career in this manner...
