THE Sydney Swans have pencilled in a round 21 comeback for Stuart Maxfield, leaving the former skipper just two games to regain form before the finals.

I hope he brings his form with him!!!!

A number of unnamed senior players are in doubt for Saturday's blockbuster against the inform Adelaide Crows at AAMI Stadium.

One would think Leo is one of the senior players in doubt

I find it offensive that Stewie is being fast tracked back into the team.
Who in this very well and even performing team should make way for an aging player who's form has been bellow par at best ?
Who in the top level of reserves should be held back for stewie ?

If stewie is fast tracked back the message to this young team = history is more important than form.

Maxfield should be played in the reserves and earn a recall on merit barring lots of injuries.

If and when the club is playing finals, don't we want Roos to pick the team he thinks is strongest.

Would not a semi-fit Maxfield playing in bursts off the bench have more impact than a lightweight and inexperienced McVeigh or Malceski playing in bursts off the bench and barely seeing the ball?

McVeigh, Malceski?? Neither have done a great deal in their limited time on the ground.

While I agree that it would be nice to have the you ng kids running around. Maxfield has had sometime to think about his game, and I would imagine he would be itching to get back in the team and prove that he is not gone. He has the bigger body, and the footy know how, compared to those two.

He would be able to have a more immediate impact as a "pinch hitter" than the likes of McV and Mal.

I don't know. Who can tell what the form of any of the personalities mentioned will be like in 6 weeks time.
The only advantage maxi definatly brings - Experience and the confidance of his own determination. But that is included in the form formula somewhere- surley.

Interesting that Roos flagged changes for this week but suggested that that might be jeopardised by whether or no the 'sore' boys get over the line. Just on Maxfield I can see Liz's point, but sometimes teams have also fallen into the trap of the 'tried and true', especially 70% as you put forward, as they err on the side of caution. Maxfield probably has the leadership capabilities but the brutal truth was his form had declined to the point that his disposal was a liability. Given that he's just starting to run again it's hard to imagine him being close to satisfactory fitness come September. I still maintain that he has to demonstrate his wares in the reserves and he has to earn/demand a game ahead of poorer performing players.

Agree. He has been out for too long. Not only will he need the mandatory 1-2 weeks in the reserves, but he will need to show the form that is good enough to play senior footy.

I for one would like to see him back as he does bring experience to the side, and ScottH is right, he would have had alot of time to think about his game.

Just on Malkeskie,

I think that if he were given some serious time playing four quarters of football over the next 5 weeks, he may well be in a lot better form than Stewie.
Stewie has shown the most signs of aging recently.

Even cressa and kelly looked more able to continue
after their last years than stewie did earlier this year.
As for williams well he is putting stewies body to shame.
A team should be careful not to automaticaly include past champions. It's bad for buisiness.

Too true. And that sets a bad example to the rest of the team.

It may be of significnts that the teams form as a whole has improved since stewies departure.

Hang on.

We all know he had a painful separation with his wife earlier this year, and that he wasn't seeing his kids. Add to the that the fact that he was carrying a bad knee injury, and the team was losing more than it was winning.

Surely these things can affect anyone's form. And are not MOL, Bazza, Buchanan, Kirk, etc ALL playing better footy since Maxi was in the side? Is it not fair to give him a shot to re-prove himself? With so much leadership and experience, surely he deserves a (possibly last) crack at finals!

As to the question of fitness, the man who is arguably THE fittest the club has ever seen will struggle less than most others to get back into the flow of AFL. I doubt he was moping around eating KFC and Pizza Hut whilst in rehab

Truth? What truth?
Don't you mean opinion?!

The truth is that, other things being equal, Maxfield's form was good enough to convince the Swans to keep him in the team. I've never heard anyone other than a few on this board criticise Maxfield's disposal . . . certainly not the Swans, nor to the best of my knowledge anyone in the media, or in football in general.

The truth was that we were playing poorly, and it's easy to blame the captain and/or the coach, which we did on this board - loudly. But that's all it was, just whingeing . . . not 'truth'.

If he's fit, Maxfield must be in the side. His strength and experience have been sorely missed. Finals matches need an extra bit of steel in the team, which Maxfield can certainly provide, and he might just make the difference in September.
