Port and Roos to divorce - opportunity for ACTAFL?

The Kangas are going to have to find a new option for their reserves team next year, following their fallout with Port Melbourne.

Given their parlous financial situation can they afford to enter a stand-alone team in the VFL?

Wonder if they'll consider entering a team in the ACTAFL given their existing links with Canberra. Would at least provide the Cygnets with some competition.

What's the reason for the falling out?

Perhaps the Swans and the Roos could spread out their players throughout the comp, like the WA and SA teams do with their reserves.

Apparently Laidley and his crew wanted more input into the lineup at Port Melbourne (eg who plays and where) but Port objected.

Given their connection with Canberra an opportunity exists. It sounds like a good idea Liz - send the Canberra Times a letter.

I'm wondering what the Canberra/Wagga clubs would feel about this considering we play more home games than away, and I'm guessing the same would apply to a Kangaroos team.

Why don't you just waltz your pretty little backside over and talk to them yourself?

Roos magoos in the ACTAFL would be fantastic.

It would be for the comp, and would make sense with them trying to push into the Canberra market, but until they make the move full time, I can't see it being an option due to finances - the Roos struggle moeny wise as it is - to have to send a team up to play in the ACTAFL comp every second week probably won't be financially viable for them unless there is funding coming from the AFL or another administrative body.

                I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Looks like the same issue that the Swans had with Port Melbourne a few years back. Surely this shows why going back to that is no option at all for us. A NSW-based league is the way forward for the Swans and for AFL in this state overall.

A great idea, but the standard is just not good enough to develop players to AFL standard.

It is not the Swans job to develop AFL in this state it is the AFL's. The Swans need to concentrate on winning games and premiership(s). That is less likely to happen fielding our magoos in a substandard comp. Until the AFL gets serious about a NSW comp and develops it to a decent standard, we cant afford to play in it, as sad as that is.

But short term pain will result in long term gain. Sure it may not be good enough now, but it needs the Swans' input to help build the standard. It would discourage development in any NSW league if the Swans ressies go back to the VFL.

I agree, but IMHO it would take at least 5 and more likely 8-10 years to get the Sydney comp up to a decent standard. Currently it is over reliant on 'interstate' players who happen to be working in Sydney.

I don't think we could afford that sort of 'short term pain', it would seriously damage our player development for many years to come.

IMO again, the reason we have such a good batch of youngsters now, is because nearly all of them 'developed' against bigger bodied, skilled players, when we were linked with Port Melbourne.

So what? It's not our responsibility. Even if it were, a Swans premiership is just about guaranteed to have more incidental benefits for NSW football than having the Swans ressies playing in Canberra.

It has been on the news down here that the Tasmanian VFL team, the Tassie Tigers are interested in becoming the Kangaroos affiliated club, and games to be played at York Park(Aurora Stadium).
