How Hird got away

They [the swans] used their two pre-draft Canberra zone selections on Robert Neill and Ben Aulich. Neill played 21 games in three seasons with them and Aulich did not even bother to move to Sydney.
Hird finally was taken by Essendon at No. 79 in the draft in which Stephen Hooper (Geelong), James Cook (Carlton) and David Donato (Fitzroy) were the first three choices.

I guess we can take some solace in the knowledge that we can't develop juniors anyway so he may not have turned out the same player.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

And this:
Had things been different in Sydney in the five-year period from the mid-1980s, the Swans would have had Wayne Carey, John Longmire and Hird playing in the same team throughout the '90s.
Whoever was responsible for recruiting back then, should be feeling VERY BAD about this.Occupational hazards:
I don't eat animals since discovering this ability. I used to. But one day the lamb I was eating came through to me and ever since then I haven't been able to eat meat.Comment

The history of our recruiting is littered with many bad decisions. James Hird is only a relatively minor blunder compared to some. For example, we traded away ALL FOUR Daniher brothers for one non-notable called Pitura in the 1970's.
We have had a sordid history of recruiting duds and letting go champions. It's possible to build two sides strong enough to win the premiership with the players we have released in the last thirty years. Admittedly, some of these players were weak dogs who couldn't bear being away from their mummies, so it's not all our fault.
Fortunately, our recruiting of late has been much improved."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Hird's story just highlights the lottery nature of the draft - I'm sure in ten years' time we'll be reading articles about how some other club passed up the chance to draft Adam Goodes, another low draft pick.
And there's nothing wrong with drafting a weak dog occasionally, either.Comment

I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

I remember when I started following the Swans I was told that most of the players were with the Swans until they could get an offer from a Victorian club.Comment
