Maybe. But he' not as consistent a ball winner at the clearances as Darren. Also the Dons in house official is particularly dangerous on their forward line late in the game, working in tandem with the B grade actor they have at FF
Oh No! Umpires for Essendon Game

These umpire appointments frustrate me more than anything!!
Perhaps a trained psychologist could chip in here with their thoughts!!
Surely after what happened with McClaren and Hird last year, as much as McClaren would say that he would not go out to prove to Essendon that he is not biased, I just think mentally he will award all the soft free kicks to Essendon and in particular Hird...do you know what I mean?
And as for Ellis...he was the "Weak Dog" umpire that gave the 50m away against the Bombers to us. Now he will subconciously favour the Bombers.
I hope I have made sense here...in short the free kick count Ess 22, Syd 11 and more importantly goals from free kicks...Ess 8, Syd 1.Swannies for life!Comment

They showed a stat during the week on On The Couch (IIRC) and it was Goals from Frees this year. Geelong led with 31, Sydney were ranked 15th with 15 (or maybe 13) only ahead of the Dogs.
I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Pannell must be Goldspink's understudy. Haven't seen one good game from him so far.Comment

Umpiring was pretty lousy for both sides, but the Bummers got the better of the soft frees.
How many times did we get pinged for a incidental grab of a jumper (Leo x2, CBolt etc).
What about about the free to Lucas against Leo for the knee in the back? What's this game coming to?
And if I saw sooky la la Hird throw up his arms one more time in a contest expecting the free I was going to have to stick my foot through the TV! If he's not the whiniest player in the comp I'll go he.Comment

And our backs were holding jumpers all night. Can't believe they would do that one on one inside 50.Comment

We got ripped off on at least two obvious deliberate out of bounds decisions. One when J Bolton was chasing (and told the umpire all about it afterwards) and one when there was an attempted rushed behind by the Filth that went over the boundary instead. A total joke.Comment

The rule seems to be that backs can get away with wrapping their arms around the forward (as was happening up the other end of the ground) but not holding the guernsey.
This is definitely something that the backs need to work on over the next month. Despite giving away inches and kgs, Leapin' Leo is a pretty capable key defender. He just needs to work a little on his scragging technique so that he gets away with it a bit more often. Bolton doesn't do it so often but one of the frees Lucas got was there, for the same reason.Comment

There was two things that annoyed me about the Lucas free kick
1. It wasnt a free kick
2. Even if it was, the umpire should have played clear advantage to Essendon, who then had a handball, followed by an unchallenged kick for goal which was missed
The idea of the advantage rule is to allow a team to play on if it has clear advantage...if they then go and stuff it up than it is their bad luck
Did the maggot pay advantage? And then call it back? If so, bad umpiring!!!!Red and white till I dieComment

Actually there is no written rule against holding the jumper. Rule 15.4.5 (c) penalises a player "who holds an opposition Player who is not in possession of the ball" The dictionary definition of hold is "to restrain or control" Leo in particular is being crucified by an overly technical distortion of the rule. He has a very effective technique of wedging himself into particularly the bigger forwards. It is an almost judo technique to stop a bigger man from bumping him away. His holding of the jumper is often not restraining or holding his opponent but retaining his balance or position. He was crucified against Lloyd. I think Roosey really needs to clarify this with Glieshen and just keep praying that we don't run into Goldspink or McLaren in the finals. (Haven't seen the Interpretations DVD of the AFL - maybe its clarified there?)Bevo bandwagon driverComment
