    Why can't AG kick?

Has anyone else noticed that Goodsey is a pretty ordinary kick. This year he continually spoons his field kicks like a nine iron. No chance for the forward to mark. Same with his kicking for goal from a set shot. I'm sure it's worse than last year.

BTW I have to say that the best deliverer into the forward fifty (arrow like low flying scuds to davis in particular - also quick and clear vision) is Barry Hall. It's just a shame he can't deliver to himself! It would certainly save him some angry outbursts.

I can't say I've noticed that AG's kicks are much worse than normal What I do tend to notice though is that it seems to me (in my vantage point in row Y of the O'Reilly stand) that he often just drops the ball on his boot without having a look.

Re: Barry Hall, I agree completely!! I've been saying since mid-last year that his best position really has to be CHF. Gives him more space to lead, and he can make use of his great delivery skills. At FF it looks like he gets bottled up too easily or something.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Hall has a big advantage over the others when delivering into the F50 though. When he gets the ball, it's normally out at the 50 or just beyond, and the forward line has fragmented, with loose players about. He does find them very well, but that's not always comparable with midfielders streaming down the ground and seeing a structured backline (and our midfielders are hopeless in this case).

As for Goodes, he does do little lob kicks. I wonder if it's because of his soccer background. He rarely has much punch to his passes.

I'm starting to think that the perfect forward set-up for us is a little like this...
        HF: Schneider Hall Davis
        FF: Ball O'Loughlin

Yes, I know... only five. But I think that's the best solution for the crowding that appeared to be the problem against Melbourne. Schneider and Davis are best suited to the half forward line where they can push up into the centre, create opportunities and provide marking options for long kicks from halfback... they can easily kick 50m goals.

Hall could become almost like Warren Tredrea at CHF... capable of dominating the game as both an aerialist and on the ground. Will probably offer us more from there, and can kick the distance.

O'Loughlin I've put up close because he's a little shaky from more than 40m out. Provides a marking option but can also rove the ball... Jason Ball at full-forward when he's not rucking, because he is the strongest mark in the team. Otherwise, O'Loughlin one out as a marking target with maybe Williams or Bolton there to crumb.

I'm certain of it... 5 man forward line is the way to go!!!

I find it hard to stomach when someone says a person of AFL level skills have gone backwards. Ofcourse they can get better, but once you learn it is hard to lose it - speaking from experience.
Maybe if a player has a form slump and loses confidence, thus maybe skills go awol, but with goodes he is in career best form, so I find this comment strange.

Well he has gone backwards IMO. I have been watching his kicking deteriorate and I am sure it is all about confidence. Have a look at him the next time he takes a mark in a position 40-50 metres out. His first reaction is to try and pass it off. He will only have a shot if he absolutely can't pass it off. When he misses (and he nearly always misses set shots these days) it only reinforces his lack of confidence and makes him more determined to do anything but kick it.

I watched him take a mark 45 metres out on a 40 degree angle at the MCG against Hawthorn. Having watched his previous behaviour I just knew he would try and pass it. I was close enough to see him look at Nick Davis and I was sure he would kick it to Nick even though any AFL footballer of any ability should have been able to kick a goal. Obviously Nick didn't know because when the pass came (groan) Nick wasn't even looking in Adams direction but had his back to Adam and seemed intent on remonstrating with his own direct opponent. To put salt on the wound whilst Davis had his back to Adam, Davis's direct opponent ran around Davis and marked the ball intended for Davis and ran up the centre of the ground and a Hawk goal ensued. (insert double very audible groan here). :-(

I remember a year or two ago that Micky O'Loughlin had a similar crisis of confidence, couldn't kick anything and was always looking for the pass off. Suddenly Mick started kicking a few and his confidence grew. My guess is that Mick had done a lot of work on the track. Adam will need to do the same and soon. His lack og goal kicking confidence is palpable. Have you noticed he would rather kick the ball off the ground towards goal rather than pick it up and have a shot.

So far everyone is right here:

Goodsey is in career best form and his roving and contested marks are superb. He kicked a nice one on the run against the Dees. I also remember him kicking 3 on the run from the ruck against the Dees last year on the MCG, thats when I knew he had decided to be one of our best.

Having said that, his 4 misses in Round 1 against Carlton was disappointing. He has lost confidence from set shots and this is worrying because if he floats up there, then he needs to convert, otherwise he is wasting valuable chances and god knows we need to take them all.

His field kicking is fine so long as he avoids kicking backwards to dangerously out of form people like Matthews, Warfe and Schauble.

I also agree that Baz is an excellent punch kick inside the 50 arc but his confidence is down on the set shot a bit lately, needs a bag to get his magic back.

I reckon I'd back O'Loughlin over Hall to kick from 50m out. Hall seems to struggle from that distance, whereas Magic usually at least makes the distance and often nails them.

Neither would be in the top 5 in the team, though, that you'd want to be kicking from there. I reckon, in order, I'd want Davis, O'Keefe, Schneider, Ball, Williams (providing he can give himself a long run-up!)

Actually strange as it might sound - jude bolton would be in our top 5 for this year at the momet. I have seen him nail at least 3 ( including one in a praccy).

Absolutely agree with the idea of Hall at CHF. he is often ending up there anyway at the mo just to get a kick. It might be a position where he can make the play more instead of having to wait for it. Again, that would help with his temper if he is more in charge of his own contribution.

Dare I say it but he could be Carey like. Would draw defenders away from the hole 35 from goal and let our speedsters lead into it.

By putting Ball in the forward line it demands a tall to drop and mark up which takes a forward away from possibly our backline. An open forward line has always been the best option, its ust that finally in the last qtr last week our mids delivery was more direct and long than usual

We must be headed towards a priemership if we are starting to pick apart our best player. His kicking isn't great but if we had 22 Goodes' we would win by 10 goals every time we played.
I say let him develop and take the good with the bad. Especially when there is so much to like about his game, as one of the most versitile players in the game. Let's see Voss or Buckley play in the ruck!

one question. Does it really matter if a player like Adam Goodes form may be down from what it was last year, especially as you say we have Barry Hall and other such players firing kicks into the goal sqaure?
i'd say Adam is just down on confidence, once he gets that back, he'll be firing on all cylinders!!!!

Hopefully but the fact that his kicks lack penetration indicates that there is a flaw in the technique that should be worked on. Like most things I guess that the more carefull you are the more likely you are to get it wrong.

Maybe every time he gets the ball he should close his eyes and say "Calm Blue Ocean....."

Now I'm contradicting myself. Is it technique or is it relaxation so that he can execute a good technique...or is relaxation considered part of technique? I dunno but, really, he should be kicking the ball better and that's that.
