    No Rising Stars for 2005

    Well Roosy did flag that we have done enough recruiting of youngsters and so far we only really introduced Dempster, Vogels and Moore in 2005.

    All have done a job when needed and apart from Vogels game against the Doggies, none really shone.

    Paul Bevan received a nomination in 2004, which brings me to the next question.

    Has anyone seen where Bevo is with his career and does anyone have any thoughts on why Dempster is better than Bevo?

    IMO, Bevo had more to offer, wasn't afraid to take players on, have a crack at goal but he was a bit more loose checking in defence. If they are happy to train LRT, why couldn't you train this aspect of Bevo's game?

      Well Paul Bevan last year was a pleasure in the team. He still may have more to offer but Vogels is an awesome player and Dempster has been playing great too. I haven't seen too much of Moore. Bevan slowed down and didn't show much effort in games IMO. Vogels is a star.

          I imagine that may have something to do with it.
          I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
          We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

              Not to mention Malceski.

              But I think that is a pretty good effort this year, especially as we have also seen the establishment of Ablett and Buchanan as regular top 22 players, and Scheider and McVeigh have also been rotated through the senior team.

              It all means that we have some solid midfield and small forward/defender depth (I suppose Spriggs may fit in there somewhere too ). And there is definitely hope that some of these guys will become true stars.

              With Dempster and Vogels we can see some promising taller guys coming through, but I suggest we desperately need to continue to draft and develop some good young talls.

                  The interesting thing about Roosy and the young guys this year is that he has spoken about the need to not throw them into the deep end straight away, but give them a few games of limited playing time, then send them back to the ressies, then give them a few more senior games etc. That all seems fine, but then there was also the LRT case where it seems they made a decision to just leave him in the seniors no matter how badly he was beaten in order to hasten his development. Two different approaches, but both working ok atm, it would seem.

                  Also note that 5 teams have not as yet had a rising star nom: St Kilda, Sydney, Kangaroos, Adelaide (all in top 5) and Port.

                      Bevan's disposal let him down. The others you have mentioned are far better kicks and hit targets more often.

                          Bevan took too long to get rid of the ball. Poor decision making and he was very hesitant whenever he had the ball.

                          As cruel as this sounds but he epitomised our stop start style when we were struggling earlier on this year.

                          I hope he gets back, because he was unbelievable to watch in his first year.

                              Damn right. I was at Optus when we were struggling against Carlton (oh, the shame!) and Bevan grabbed the ball, tore through the centre like a runaway train and nailed a goal that seemed to lift the whole team. No reason why he can't do it again.
                              He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

                                  When we have a bit of a short arse team it definately does but his early season form was crapola no doubt, was just getting caught too often, other blokes had to be given a chance (just like he took his in 2004).

                                  His 2nd's form has been better the last month and he's been an emergency the last few weeks. He'll be back.
