Does Nicksy's retirement actually free up a space for a rookie player to be promoted, considering he was on the veteran's list?

AFAIK, A rookie can still be promoted, I was under the impression the seniors list was just salary cap related

I didn't actually think you're allowed to promote a rookie for a retirement (regardless of the veteran list status). It had to be for a long term injury.

However, that is not consistent with the Lions promoting a player once Pike retired last week so obviously I must have been mistaken.

I heard Nicks interviewed last night and he said his retirement is meant to be effective from the end of the season, not now. He said it was just put on the club website as being immediate. In any case I can't see someone being promoted who hasn't played a game as yet. The replacements for injury will come out of the pool who have already saddled up this year. It costs money and I think Liz is correct re. the timing, unless they've changed it. There used to be a deadline for promoting rookies.

With three rounds to go its highly unlikely that some poor first gamer will be needed. Especially considering our good run with injuries.

However, it does free up a space on the list for next year, and if Maxfield retires that makes two. This is good news because we have a really solid list of Rookies to choose from, and Vogels will definately be promoted. I'd hate to lose some of the talent we are starting to develop to other clubs before they get a good run in the seniors.

As I understand it, since Nicksy was on the veteran's list, he was effectively an extra man in addition to the full number of players allowed on the playing list. Therefore it does not free up a spot at all.

That is mostly correct. However, the number of 'designated rookies' a team is allowed (ie rookies who are allowed to play senior football regardless of long term injuries) is dependent on the number of veteran players a team has.

If we go into next season with no veterans we could nominate two rookies to play senior football. With one veteran we can nominate just the one.

Last year Bevan and Rogers were nominated and both played senior football.

I'm not sure that we ever cleared up the mystery of whether the Swans nominated a rookie this year, despite early season claims that Shaw had been.

Maxfield is eligible to be a veteran next year, if he plays on. I know most people expect him to retire but I don't believe this is a foregone conclusion, and the fact that he is eligible for veteran status means the club might be more amenable to the idea if they view him to be a risky option, age or fitness wise.

                      Aaron Rogers.

Local Sydney boy drafted by Melbourne in the same year that we took LRT. Spent two years on the Dees' senior list without playing a senior game (Wizz Cup excluded) before being delisted.

We rookied him last year and he played a couple of early season games in defence. He wasn't retained this year (obviously).

Most on this site are over the top on the tall back thing. I'll go for something no one ever talks about.

                        A crumbing small forward.

But hen again we need someone like Nicksy to replace him.

A medium back who plays tall and can take a mark, who is really a winger (never played there) but, can go forward and play short in the role of a crumbing forward who can play tall and take a mark and hunt around at the feet of Bazza.

But do we have any of those types of players on the rookie list at the minute that could make the step up to senior level? I very much doubt that to be the case.

On that point, and leaving aside the veteran issue, this is a long-term injury isn't it? It just so happens that it will be forcing him into retirement at the end of the season.

Last years Campbell. In both cases big lads, physically able to mix it in senior football but unfortunately lacking the talent to make it.
