Sydney needs to recruit a tall, solidly built defender. Who should we target? Who might be available?

Targetting a tall defender in the next trade
Occupational hazards:
I don't eat animals since discovering this ability. I used to. But one day the lamb I was eating came through to me and ever since then I haven't been able to eat meat. -
I would love to get Ben Rutten, but obviously that would be impossible.
If Jon Hay can get himself on the pitch, he might be a good get considering our position on the premiership clock.
But other than that i am not too sure.Official Driver Of The "Who Gives A @@@@ As The Player Will Get Delisted Anyway" Bandwagon.

I hear Andrew Schauble from the ACTAFL is pretty good. Apparently he won a B&F, so he can't be half bad.
I don't think we 'need' to recruit one. Decent key defenders are in high demand and unless they wanted to leave for personal/contractual reasons, I doubt their clubs would want to trade them.Comment

He'd probably want to go back to WA if he was to be traded.Comment

Can't see why you'd choose Hay over Schauble.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Hay is struggling with I believe, knee injuries. I doubt that he would re-capture his best form in the near future and the Hawks would still want a lot for him. Perhaps consider looking at a tall forward who could be turned into a backman. For eg. someone of the ilk of a Toby Thurstan's who's athletic but not strong enough for the role of forward. Sometimes the best defenders have been forwards as juniors.LIFE GOES ONComment

Our defence is one of the best in the comp. Most of them are young and there are still plenty of improvements from within (e.g. LRT). So IMHO, there is no immediate need to recruit an ready-make defensive tall at all. We could start grooming someone to take over the FB position from Barry in few years time (or lessen the workload from him in short term). But immediately, we do not need a major surgery.
I think Liz's observation is spot on. Dempster looks a very likely FB type. Very strongly built and is very footy smart. Just need to be a bit more fleet-flooded, he would be a decent FB in few years time (with the natural physical development obviously).
To me, getting a genuine class midfielder should still be our priority at the moment.Comment

LRT, Grundy, Dempster, Vogels could conceivably become some of the KPPs we need in the future but they are all reasonable long shots at the moment (to varying degrees) and I reckon you can never have too many developing young talls in the nursery to allow for the fact that some will never quite grow into their bodies or will be injury prone (ala Fitzy, Hunt, Stevens). And if you do land up with more than you need they are very valuable commodities at the trade table, much more so than capable smalls.Comment

I'm pretty confident we have enough young on ball talent with McVeigh, Malceski, Schmidt, Willoughby and Moore. So while we will take further options in future drafts they may be second or thrid rounders.
The priority in this years and the next draft should be the best available tall player whether that be as a defender or forward.
After trading our first pick last year, I reckon this year they won't trade for an established player unless something outstanding came our way.
Also when you look at height on our list, both Dempster and the smokey Matthew Davis both could play key position forward or back in the coming years. When you see Dempster in the flesh he is actually very tall and I beleive M Davis is arounfd the same height.
