There are two or three constant knockers of LB on this site.
That's fine because I have my pet-projects too but I am genuinely surprised that he cops the level of critisism he does from some. IMO you have it wrong if you think he is not a valuable member of our team.
I believe you need to take several things into account before you knock him.
Firstly, the coach has OBVIOUSLY given him licence to go for a run, provide some dash out of the backline and hence create opportunities for those upfield - otherwise he would not do it so consistently. In actual fact, this often has the result of breaking up the play and providing opportunities in the next phase - something that is important in the current flooding era.
Secondly, he is relatively strong for his size, a good spoiler and quite quick. He plays tall and adds a lot of flexibility to our backline.
Finally, he gets a game week-in, week-out and hardly spends any time on the bench ala Warfe, Nicks, Schauble, etc. Would Roos play him if he was not happy with his performance?
I basically think he draws critisism because he shows a lot of dash and "cheek" to take on the defenders as he does - and hence is noticed. Not too many backman in the AFL have the courage to take on the opposition as he does, especially with the holding the ball rule the way it is these days, with "prior opportunity" being heavily in favour of the chasers. For those of you who have played football, you would realise how easy it is to get caught with players coming at you from EVERY angle. Think about this and the fact that he very rarely gets caught considering the amount of times he tucks the ball under his arm and dashes off.
Take Friday against Melbourne for example, I could be wrong but I believe he played on Robertson who has had several very good games this year. Not only did Leo get a healthy share of the ball and provide the style of play as noted above, his opponent hardly got a touch. Yet there are knockers out this week!
Although his disposal by foot is not the best in the side, it is quite reasonable (about average) and leaves some others for dead.
Please watch Leo in future with these things in mind, and sit back and enjoy the unique and successful style he brings to our team.
