    Maxfield

If Stewie is not burning up the field in the magoos, I don't think he should return. Kirk, Goodes and Hall have shown we have enough good leaders. Whilst Stewie?s dedication can?t be questioned, is he in our best 22? Last year he was struggling, with a huge layoff and limited match fitness will he cut it now?

We cannot risk a past his prime veteran coming back from injury when the premiership is on the line. Premierships are won by being the best, not reputation or sentiment.

If the Saints beat Freo and we beat the Roos we can?t finish anywhere but fourth, then he can have a farewell game against Hawthorn. Otherwise no way, unless justified by form..

I was worried last year that Stewie was backing up for one year too many. I have the same reservations about Willo this year, as his form this year is way down on 2004.

What does everyone else think? I will be watching the magoos this week with greater than usual interest.

Considering the youngsters in the team only get limited game time anyway I would much rather see a semi-fit maxfield coming off the bench as an impact player than a first year player come finals time. He's definately not the player he used to be but I think he's more valuable to us at this time of year than a Mcveigh or Moore.

Maxfields got 2 more games in the reserves before we have to make that decision, so lets just see how he goes.

But I concur with the people who see risk in playing him half fit as an impact player. There is an old adage with finals, in that you dont go in with injuries.

hmmmm....must be a very old addage as I haven't heard it before, If anything I think the finals are the only time you would play an injured player. There have been many occasions in finals when teams have played champion players that were carrying injuries.

Not as many times as you've seen injured players reinjure themselves within the first quarter due to the finals intensity.

Now maxfields days as a champion are over even if he was 100% fit.

Its a long long way from only lasting a half in the ACT league to playing a AFL final.

If we have an injury, and Stewie performs better in the magoos than Malceski, McVeigh or Moore, then he earns his place. Those three have already shown they can do a job. Selection should be on performance, not reputatuion.

So if hall were to be injured next week and played the week after in the reserves but didn't do quite as well as Malceski then he should miss out on a place in the first final?

Hehe, Sorry I was just being pedantic. Seriously though, I think the lift that having maxfield available for a final and the chance he could have a big impact coming off the bench is worth more to us than what any of the 1st year players could offer.

Fair enough he should have to get through a couple of reserves games but I think despite being injured for a long time he should still be deserving of at least an automatic spot on the bench.

Don't rate McVeigh as a finals player. Too soft at the ball and too weak in the tackle. Provided Stewie is not carrying an injury (I admit that is unknown at this stage) surely his hardness at the ball, experience and footy smarts must put in front of a player who just gets brushed aside at the contest.

How about simply being guided by what Roos has already said "Stewie won't come into the team unless he knows he'll make a contribution." The team means too much to him to simply do it for ego. Off the bench he could be a great asset - and essential if someone like Willo goes down reinjured. My worry is that he was being a bit too hard before he left and might give away fees.

But he's spent a lot of time in the coaches box and could be great for our tactics in some very hard games. And, if he's fit, his presence will lift the team more than any other bench player.

                            Really ?

If I was a young player who saw another young player dropped to the two's to make way for an old warrior way past his prime, I would not be that uplifted, in fact I would be depressed and a touch cynical about the club's team selection process.

No passengers this final series please, or we will blow a perfectly good oportunity to win the flag.

But you've already told everyone here and over at BigFooty that the Swans have no chance of winning a flag anyway as long as Paul Roos is coach so why not give the old warhorse another run? Anyway, the kids are probably depressed enough about Paul Williams' continual selection.
