Dark Horse

Not necessarily always the case but I seem to think that there have been a number of dark horse players that have come out of relative obscurity to play a big part in grand/finals. Think Aaron Keating and Shane Ellen for the Crows. Glenn Freeborn for the Roos.

If we are to go all the way this year, who do you think might come out of the seconds to play a big/match winning part in the finals campaign.

I'd love to see Paul Bevan play a game like he had against Carlton last year.

I was actually thinking just the same thing a couple of days ago.

It's hard to pick who might be the one to do it (hence being a 'dark horse' - d'urrh ).

For us someone like O'Keefe - recognised as good but probably not recognised as a matchwinner.

Not sure if he counts, but Luke Vogels. How awesome would it be if he won a grand final for us. A year ago, he was playing in a regional comp, alot older than the other blokes being drafted. Sydney don't draft him, but then pick him up in the rookie draft at pick #28. He gets promoted, plays on and off during the year, but plays well enough to ensure finals selection. We make the grand final, he comes off the bench and scores the winning goals.

To use a cliche, it's like a fairytale.

I thought of Vogels. I was tending to think that it's usually (not always) more established players, but he possibly has the talent to do it and given no one would notice him for a while, he might have the opportunity too (assuming he gets more than 10 minutes TOG).

I'd love it to be Bucky. Just imagine his joy if his kick went through at the critical time.

But the ultimate fairy tale would be: scores level in the GF (or the Swans 2 points down) and with 10 seconds on the clock LRT takes a mark on the 50. He has no time to pass off so has to kick for goal - and it goes through.

It'd be a busy night in coronary theatres around the MCG and across Sydney.

Its often the lesser forward that has to perform in grand finals as they key forwards are covered.

Vogels is probably as likely as any.

Ablett? considering the ump two weeks ago didn't rekon he could get it from 65m to see himkick a goal from the same distance to seal it up for us would be great too.

or Vogels. he can cut it with the big boys after that goal against the western Bulldogs.

Benny Mathews - a Stan Magro like run around the wing, gasnier sidestep and a 65 metre banana to win the the grand final by 5 points.

Someone like Fosdike or Noggy could pop up with 3 or 4 goals - they've never kicked a bag before but you never know.

I think you mean Phil Manassa rather than Magro, but I have no idea who this Gasnier is. Did he play for Collingwood too?

If Voges did that, he would become as legendary as Ted Hopkins. I hope his career does more than Ted's did tho.

(Ted Hopkins was the 19th man for Carlton in the 1970 Grand Final, who came off the bench after half time and kicked four goals. There was no interchange in those days: once you came off you could not go back on.)
