      Wow - deja vu!

Funnier than Hey Dad but not quite as funny as Seinfeld.

A decapitation is funnier than 'Hey Dad'!

Only someone who's never been decapitated would say that.

The reason I am quietly encouraged by our performances over the past 6 or so weeks is not just because we've been winning - and winning comfortably - but because we've been doing it without all our top rung players starring.

We can hope for improvement from all of the team but at the pointy end of the season you can't rely on it coming from the likes of Buchanan, Ablett or LRT, who've already performed far better than we dared to dream 6 months ago.

Of our top rung of players, Hall and Kirk have been consistently playing close to their best. That doesn't mean that we can't hope one or the other will put in a blinder in any particular match, but again, sustained performance from the team can't rely on these two playing any better.

The flashier mid-tier players - the likes of Davis, O'Keefe, Kennelly - are going to oscillate between good contributors and starring and we shouldn't expect that to change. I'd put Magic in that category too, even though he probably rates slightly higher than 'mid-tier', just because the nature of his role means he will be slightly up and down.

The less flashy mid-tier players we have are pretty dependable but we can't expect a whole heap more (but we can assume they are unlikely to let us down) - here I'm thinking of Ball, Jolly, Leo, B2, Crouch, maybe Mathews.

The key, for me, lies with three players - Williams, B1 and Goodes. None has been out of form in recent weeks but I believe all have put in sufficiently frequent performances in the past that are far better than the last few weeks that we can reasonably believe they are capable of lifting the team to another level yet. And good as the team has been recently, they will need to find at least one more gear to go all the way.

Yep - I think these are the key for really stepping up in finals.

You may get a couple of others here and there, but these are probably the ones that really need to step up in finals. Williams and Goodes have shown their match-winning potential in recent years and have another gear. Based on early-season form, Bolton still has further improvement.

They're also the 3 most likely to get tagged week in week out - tho I note Willo has been playing more of a tagger role himself lately - spent quite a lot of time at HBF last Sunday.

Anyways, our desire for them to step up needs to be tempered with the amount of attention they receive - in reality we've beaten some good teams in recent weeks with only modest performances from Willo & Goodes in particular, so perhaps star turns from them aren't as crucial as it might seem.
