After defeating Ainslie today, 11-9-75 to 9-12-66, in a torrid encounter.
Ainslie came out fired up and kicked the first 4 goals. Swans rallied however to kick 4 of the next 5 and trail by 3 points (4-3 to 5-0) at qtr time.
What was threatening to be a shoot-out turned into an arm wrestle in the second. Ainslie kicked the first after a Schauble error, and were unlucky not kick the second after the umpire called a player back who had kicked a goal playing on to advantage. From the mark he could only manage a point. Tempers became frayed shortly after. The resulting melee saw 2 Ainlslie players reported and Schmidt kick one from the square after getting a 50m penalty. Heath James marked 40 metres out on the siren and subsequently limped off, leaving Malceski to kick the goal.
James was back to start the second half and played a part in the second Swans goal in the first 5 mins. Schmidt kicked the first then a clever 1-2 between Schauble (who started the second half at CHF) and James saw Schauble kick one a minute later. Sunny, Schmidt, Willoughby and Moore started to have some influence through the middle, while Malceski began to show his class. Powell was playing in the backline and getting a fair bit of it. Highlight of the 3rd term though was an Ainslie player marking on 50. While lining up for his shot Schaubs ran from CHF to full back in time to touch the ball on the line. At 3 qtr time it was the Swans 9-8-67 to Ainslie 7-9-57.
Ainslie goaled early in the last term but Quade replied with one of his own at the 8 min mark after some great play by Malceski. A goal to Schmidt from 50 mid way through the term was the sealer but Ainslie did not lay down. They goaled again at the 18 min mark and continued to play hard aggressive footy. A narrow miss 5 mins in to time-on from Ainslie would have brought them within a kick but it was not to be. Swans held on to win by the best part of 2 goals and book a berth in the GF.
Sadly today would almost certainly seem to be the last Heath James will play in the Red and White. While he led strongly and marked well from FF early in the match it was clear that he was not going to kick more than 20 metres. He was off in the first and second qtrs with what appeared to be hamstring and back problems. Mid way through the 4th he appeard to go lame on a lead and came off dragging his (right?) leg. He spent the remainer of the match on his back with both legs elevated. McVeigh started the 4th term at FF and came off after 5 to sit the remainder on the bench with an ice pack up near his groin. Earl Shaw appeared to roll his ankle at the opening bounce and spent much of the match on the bench. Guy Campbell did an OK job in the ruck.
Goals: Schmidt 3, Malceski 3, Potter 1, Powell 1, Schaubs 1, Quade 1, McVeigh 1
Lobster's Best: Malceski, Powell, Sundqvist, Willoughby, Potter with honourable mentions to Schmidt and Moore. Ed Clarke showed a bit, as did Campbell, Hayes and Quade. Schaubs was great when it mattered and quiet when it didn't, though he did make a few errors.
Ainslie manned the tuck shop and the Pies and Sausage Rolls were from "Mick's Bakehouse". Great pastry but a little sloppy inside (did not have a sausage roll). The BBQ Sanger sandwich was of a high quality. The Carlton Draught was icey cold.
