Comment: Why do West Australians have to put up with fourth rate Football journalism? An example is of a journalist sometimes (laughingly to me) labelled an "expert" who appeared on mid-morning radio today. This "journalist/expert" of I think at least 50 years could not understand the 'viciousness" of the reaction (of non-Eagles) people in WA about the Leo Barry/Stenglein incident. This commentator famously well known for his umpire bashing then proceeded to try and analyse Leo Barry's motives rather than the umpires decision making and then further ameliorated the umpires non-tripping decision on Goodes as a "slight" touch on the leg. This commentator of 50 plus years experience who has seen the umpires booed off of probably every football game ever known to man could not understand the appalling feeling of a large section of football lovers' (note: not Eagles supporters, but football lovers - they are not the same thing and Yes they do exist in this State) huge lack of iustice and fair play that stole a game from a brave and desering team. This is an inherent Australian trait I believe - a strong feeling of justice. Their feeling of the unfairness of it all translated into an out-pouring of vective. This journalist however classified that feeling as simply a hatred of the Eagles. A fan is someone who thinks that every decision for their team is correct and all decisions against their team are basically incorrect or suspect. Alas the journalists in this town are all "fans". This is the sort of pap we get delivered over here in this State on a daily basis."
While driving around Perth on Saturday, I listened to the ABC sports commentators justifying the decisions of the night before. Then one of them asked "How would you feel if it was reversed and those two decisions had been given against the Eagles?" There was a stunned silence then some bluster as they agreed that maybe it was an issue.
And, yes I know that we should be looking forward (and I am) to the Cats game. But by rights, we should now be looking at playing the survivor of the SA showdown for a spot in the Grand Final. Instead we have to first beat the Cats then play two Grand Finals at the MCG within two weeks. I think the first of those will be the toughest ask. If we beat the Saints then I think we can lay claim to being the best team in the competition.
