FIFA has set a precedent in the case of acknowledged umpiring errors, by ordering that a World Cup qualifying game be replayed. In the game last week, between Uzbekistan and Bahrain, a penalty goal was disallowed because of a player moving early. Instead of allowing the penalty kick to be retaken, the ref awarded a free kick the other way. Bizarrely, the side hurt by the decision was already 1-0 up, so presumably would have won anyway. But FIFA ordered the result cancelled and the game be replayed.
Of course, a replay is not quite what we were looking for after last Friday night, but it's an answer to all those who said "the umpire has made his decision and they will never reverse it".
