    Umpiring

Amazingly eveyone seems pretty relaxed about the umpiring (there were at least three decisions not paid to Geelong at various points) but the reality is we were absolutely dudded again.

    Some examples

First inside fifty Scarlett leans his elbow on Bazza's shoulder to go up for the spoil...right in front.

Fourth quarter O'Keefe goes for a speccy but as he takes it his arms are chopped..result Michael Christian makes some smarmy comment about "just chopping the arms enough!!!!!!!!!!"

Dempster jumper tugged on the wing in final quarter to spoil an otherwise fabulous mark.

7 ruck contests where the Geelong ruckman was behind yet wrapped an arm around the waist of Ball or Jolly. SEVEN! for no frees at all.

In the final ruck Playfair pulled Ball's jumper out about a foot....NOTHING

In the final quater right in front of goal one of the blondies marked from a kick that didn't travel 15...Play on...fair enough....except the HE HAD HIS HEAD RIPPED OFF as he was brought to ground. That was a big miss. 40 out directly in front.

Also in the final quarter there was a soft but clear fee in front of goals not paid resulting in the usual "umps have put the whistle away!" line.

Might have been when Crouch was on his knees picking up the ball in the left forward pocket and he was cannoned into...with knees... in the back. He didn't go to ground, though...no acting, no free it seems.

On the plus side we received our first ever free pass, Kirk was holding the ball in the forward fifty, not paid, Davis goal from next ball up.

I thought the umpiring was bad but it appeared balanaced . They ignored transgressions on both sides. i think they put the whistle away to avoid a controvesy again.
Were the thrown ball ups because of the surface or because the Umpires were trying to avoid the large packs forming to keep the game moving?

yeah its very frustrating but hopefully we can get some luck from the umps in the next few weeks. we're due for some

i imagine they'll be a massive bronx cheer if bazza gets a free on friday night - i hate how its one rule for him and as soon as our defenders slightly infringe its immediatelya free

Yeah, that is annoying , but Leo had a relatively low penalty game on Friday.
If memory serves me we won the amazing round three at the Gabba from a free given to Barry Hall on the siren

After watching the last quarter for the millionth time I have to say the umpires did a very good job in some pretty conditions at the end. There were plenty of little technical free kicks that could have been picked out but they sensibly let them go as they had no real impact on the game. Also they were calling time on during stoppages pretty early in the quarter which was great.

Pity they can't put away the whistles for the technical stuff a bit more frequently.

The inconsistencies in frees (specifically LRT missing out despite getting a blow to the head) has been put down to different umpires at either end of the ground to resolve family arguments in our household.

After a game played mostly out of reach from goals for whatever reason, the Umps were kept busier than ever. You heard the stat, 50 throw ins at one point, the Umps were under as much pressure as the WCE game the week before.

This week, the missed some in the first half for Sydney but maybe for Geelong too, hard to notice when you have one red and one white eye.

The effort in the final quarter was outstanding. Simply brilliant and as has been said before, they allowed the best play of the night go until the pill was unremovable. Ball up, Sydney win!

As much as I am unaccustomed to praising these guys to a forum like this, they allowed the play that won Sydney the game. They didn't win it for Sydney, but they ALLOWED THE PLAY that did win the game.
