    Malthouse comments

Malthouse's view (part of much larger article):

"Geelong was stiff, adopting the Adelaide-Sydney game plan and almost beating the Swans. Mark Thompson has never overly relied on flooding, but the Cats got back in numbers and all but drowned Sydney.

Geelong's final-quarter fadeout had as much to do with running out of gas as Nick Davis's brilliant four-goal spree.

It is very difficult to switch game plans at any stage, let alone mid-September. In athletics terms, it's like a 100m sprint champion switching to the 400m. You have to train and practise to play the flood and the Cats, having executed their ploy near perfectly, faltered at the end.

I think many of us underestimated the travel factor for Sydney. Most teams struggle after a trip to Perth and the Swans were as flat as a tack through much of the game.

Collingwood lost Nick Davis in 2003 when we could not persuade the Sydneysider to stay in Melbourne. It left a sour taste for both parties at the time, but I was thrilled for Nick as he booted the Swans into the preliminary final."

I don't really understand the point of this.
So Malthouse is happy. Big Deal. It's not like he's got anything better to do this time of the year.
With regards to his theories on football: utter garbage like everything else that comes out of his moustachioed gob.

Personally, I thought it was a perfect summation of the match. Also, he was the first coach to suggest that Sydney plays finals football every week. And we'll see if that's a help when we have to play again next Friday - and the following Saturday .

And he at least is magnanimous about Nicky D.

Of course he's magnanimous, he's gotta cover his arse. He's got no idea where he's gonna be next year. Probably a Swans boot-studder.

I think the comment about being flat after Perth is spot on and was underestimated in the lead-up by some media types.

I guess having two premierships on his resume would make him a shoe in for that job

Agree. IMO that is also one of the reasons why Adelaide lost their finals game to St Kilda. They were back from Perth and feeling flat the same way as the Swans were on Friday night.

well 2 flags didn't Blighty too far did it?

Anyway, has anyone noticed how similair the voices of Malthouse and Steve Bracks are?

                Seriously.

Next time you here either of them on radio, bare that in mind.

Come to think of it, I've never seen them together in the same room. Maybe they're the same person.

But which one is the evil persona?
                (my money's on Bracks)

What's so hard to understand? His happiness is justified by knowing he always held Nick in high regard as a footballer and then watching him do what he did on Friday night.

That would be determined by whether he worried about what people like you thought of him.

Of couse he wants to keep Nick sweet. He's going to be studding his tongueless boots next year.

I think you need to qualify that statement. Or I'll have to take it as a flame.

I wouldn't be at all surprised by a Malthouse sacking sometime next year depending on the Magpies' form. We need one of those "who will be the next coach sacked" polls.
