    Any comments on this one?

Anyone have an OZTAM unit in their home, can someone shed light on why are TV ratings in Sydney are so poor for our matches. Everyone i have spoken to(about 100+ people) tell me they watched the game on Friday night?

Maybe people in Sydney are not used to watch the Swans play on Friday night. That is the only explanation I could muster.

I dont know anyone who didnt watch at least the end of the game on Friday night, which is supported to some extent by the time of the audience peak for the game.

It does seem odd. We get twice the crowd, paying twice the price, for a game twice as close, you TV is the odd one out.

But, 378,000 is a great result. Shows there is keen interest in AFL in Sydney, but the sports fan has so much choice.

I bet the NRL are secretly upset. Thats a pretty bad result for them in NRL "heartland". While winning, the cricket and AFL have stolen substantial viewers.

I think that's pretty low. I have had a lot of people call me saying they watched the game....and these are non-AFL people. Even my husband who went to the Wests Tigers NRL game and my Rugby-mad boss watched the last quarter. Seems a bit odd to me.

We need to remember that we are a minority sport here, but are making ground.

10 years ago the numbers would have been half of that, and in 10 years it will be double. Things take time... a generation or more.

These numbers are actually quite ok.

I know a media bloke who's not convinced the ratings are accurate, they are based on averages and who has the people meters or whatever they're called.

As an ex-Sydneysider I appreciate how much League has the inside running on TV - but interestingly, not in live attendance, you'd often have to put two or three League games together to match the attendance at a Swans game.
And there are lots of people who wouldn't watch sport anyway.
Then SBS has the Ashes - always a big draw and aren't the management delighted with the closeness of the series.
So the figures for the AFL are pretty good. It has always been a hard market to crack but nothing will succeed like a successful Swans.

I am sick of these articles appearing in the Melbourne press. They don't really prove a point and fly against the fact Sydney has had excellent average crowds and memberships figures for many years.

TV may be the final frontier for Sydney but Friday's figures were far from bad.

One thing the TV ratings don't include is the number of people watching the game at pubs and clubs and considering it was a Friday night I am sure plenty were out in the city and burbs that night glued to the tele.

The statistics behind rating is sound, but its the distribution of people meters thats corruptable (cue the Kerry's).

Anyway, I read Channel 10 is selling 30 second ads for the GF at:
                    $50,000 in Melbourne
                    $14,000 in Sydney
                    $10,000 in Adel and perth
                    $8,000 in Brisbane.

So for a 1 team non-AFL town, we punch well above our weight.

It seems strange. Talkback radio today was innundated with people who watched the swans game. There was much more talk about the Swans than all the other NRL finals last weekend, especially with Steve Price.

I'd like to know how many ratings boxes are in sydney and what areas they are in.

Even consistent ratings winners like National Nine News can only pull a maximum $10,000 dollars for a 30-second slot, and that's the nation wide figure.

Would love to know what the ratings were 4 the prelim. I reckon they will be the best ever for Swans on a Fri night...

I agree, I was out and about after the game last night and everyone was talking about the game - I am expecting some big time ratings.

Swans power Ten to Friday night win
                              By Terry TV

The Sydney Swans did the Ten Network proud on Friday night, powering it to a win on the night and providing, finally, the most watch match of the AFL finals season so far.

More than 1.828 million people watched the broadcast, with the audience in Sydney doubling on the levels of the two previous Friday nights at 414,000. Even Brisbane viewers switched on, the audience up there more than doubling as well to 171,000.

But Melbourne saw an average audience of a massive 765,000, 259,000 in Adelaide and 219,000 in Perth.

Ten won the night with a 34.8% share, Seven was second on 25.2% and Nine was third with a 22.8% share. The ABC was down on 13.2% and SBS was on par with a 4.0% share (a bit come down from the high teens with the second night of the last Ashes test a week earlier.

Ten won Sydney narrowly though, despite the presence of the Swans. Ten finished 0.2% in front of Seven, 29.6% to 29.4%. Nine was way back on 23.1%. ten had big wins in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, but Nine won Brisbane from Seven with Ten a distant third.

The game peaked at more than 2.2 million viewers between 10.15 and 10.30 when the Swans ran away with the match.

                              Onwards to Victory!
