Nick Davis as Goal Kicking Coach

You must agree that if we would take our opportunities on set shots at goal, we would relieve ourselves of a lot of pressure.

N.D. looks to be the most relaxed and confident player around the zone.Many of our guys (you know who they are) seem to tighten up and not kick to a target behind/between the goals

It's funny you say this. I said to my husband after the game that they needed a new goal kicking coach and he suggested Davis

I think Tony Lockett became our goalkicking coach on a part time basis the year after he retired for the first time. As I recall, the great man's incredible skills didn't extend to the ability to TEACH others how to kick as well as he did

I think some of Nicky D's talent is pretty much instinctive, which is hard to teach. There was an article a while back that talked about him going back to a routine for set shots, which his teammates could do with reading.

We just underestimate the complexity of what is going on in the game. There was one article today that outlined the moves of more than half a dozen Swans players to give Nick that kick. Obviously Ball and Nick but Schneider blocked Hunt and others kept their counterparts clear so there was space available. Nice when a team movement works out.

This appeared to be a set play. However, all the set plays and practice in the world won't do much without some player intuition/ natural awareness/whatever.

Did anybody else notice how poor the kicking for goal was in the warm ups?

The posts were hit at least twice, once in the early warm up and once just before the game and from where I was sitting it seemed an awful lot of behinds were kicked.

Walking across from Redfern it was really windy and I thought we might be in trouble. The when the Cats won the toss I thought we were really in trouble.

i was always tought at footy training to pretend there is another post right in the middle of the big sticks and to aim for that. it works wonders and isnt rocket science when you think about.

i know that tony modra used to aim for a post when he practiced kicking for goal and other players pick out someone in the crowd to kick it too (behind the big sticks off course)

but i guess it all comes down to routine - similar to a bowlers runup in cricket and getting the correct drop onto the boot.

im confident that we'll turn it round this week

When we won the toss against WCE I thought it was a sign. Seems you need to lost the toss to win the game though, must be the mighty law of averages.

It should all come down to having a process. Every single commentator / special comments person who has been a goal kicker of any note goes on and on about the importance of process.

If all 22 of them don't have a routine they are comfortable with, and which they use at every training session and in warm ups before the game, they should be sent out onto the SCG and not allowed to leave until they have developed one and practiced it.
