Should this club be more cocky?

I was reading the saints, eagles, crows forums etc, and all the supporters there seem to think its in the bag. The saints think they will slaughter us. I am always so worried about the swans, and i dont think im alone.

How come the club and the fans here etc arent all more cocky? is there a lack of belief?

is this a pointless thread, probably, but it made me think

I think we have a great side that is always underrated, statiscally we have a top defence, we have a solid midfield and an awesome attack. We have gotten to the prelim with a lot of players yet to perform, we can only get better, maybe there should be a lot more confidence,

im tipping the swans by 40 points just because i hope some saints fella reads this and it annoys him as much as their posts annoyed me. They are overrated and we are gonna stick it right up them.

I think it comes down to the fact that I can remember Adelaide and West Coast winning premierships, my father can remember St Kilda winning one but unfortunately my grandfather is no longer alive.

I believe the club has cleared a spot in their Trophy room in Sydney, already. Unfortunately, the dust build up from the last 23 years needs a good clean up.

I don't think there is a lack of belief (I also think we will win) but I am enjoying the forums, the input and the banter on RWO. I would NOT enjoy the banter on the other sides you mention, purely because they are aiming so high, they can only fall further than we do.

I believe that we, swans supporters, have our feet on the ground, know the weakness of our team as well as its strenght, we know the team knows what to do and we will cheer like hell to help them achieve that.

I think we anticipate (and quietly believe) that we will do the best we can. If that gets us over the line, then lets hope the Weagles beat the Crows and we can have a re-match on neutral ground !!! ...

No - and experience - winning the prelim without the week off is rare - although it has happened.

          The odds are against us.

Personally my head says it is too much to get over, heart says we are in it.

Frankly I wish I could wake up tomorrow and it was decided one way or another.

Being cocky does not help - this is a huge task.

I suspect the winner from here is the mentally toughest as distinct from the most naturally talented. Excuse my honesty but personally I have doubts over whether some of our better players have that mental toughness.

Going back two years to this week you would certainly say not - would you say the same about last friday night? REally we were terrible.

So no reason to be confident, just sanguine.

We are above being arrogant and cocky. We are an educated bunch i must say compared to most of the other clubs.

This is what I love about our supporter base.

I would love the Swans to start pushing their weight around a bit more.
Off the field we are in the "big 4", have the most expensive jumper in australian sport (about the same as the wallabies), the most exposure on TV (or 2nd), and contribute much more than 1/16th to AFL revenue.

We should be dictating AFL policy as much as collingwood does.

We should expect at least a prelim every year.

We should get our ground of choice for any game.

Before I was a swan, I was was a carlton supporter, and that is the mentality they had when they won the most VFL/AFL flags, (before they decended into Elliot induced rabble). I wish the swans would adopt some of those demands on itself.

It's called realism. 71 completed seasons without a flag is 71 seasons where hopes have been dashed sometime during the season. Whether it's early in the season in the realisation that we will miss the finals, or on Grand Final Day (five times since 1933), we know that we should not expect a premiership to drop out of the sky into our waiting arms. Premierships are difficult to win, and with 15 other clubs competing for the prize, our chances of landing a flag are not great.

We are playing a club that has beaten us comfortably the last two times we have played them. Even before the finals, many on RWO have said that the one side we should avoid in the finals is St Kilda, and here we are meeting them in a crucial final. The moment of truth is at hand.

Thus we are not getting our hopes up.

If we do beat the Saints, I expect things will change very quickly, particularly if our Grand Final opponents are the Eagles. We almost beat the Eagles in Perth, and we should fancy our chances on neutral territory. Even if we should meet Adelaide, we would probably have reason to hope we can beat them, too.

Ive learned over the years to never to get too cocky because this club has a habit of pulling the rug from under you. Last week was the most confident Ive ever been prior to a game and look what nearly happened.

I was cocky prior to the 96 finale and also before the 98 Finals series. Im not making the same mistake again

There are 1933 team photos everywhere in the Swans rooms and offices etc. I'd like to see them all replaced by something more modern.

Gee, Eddie was not happy last week on the footy show when BB probed him him about the fact that Sydney now had the most expensive Jumper in the AFL, he was not happy Jan! and of course denied it and said Collingwable still had the most expensive jumper in the League!

Calm down - games aren't won or loss by chat room posts.

If you know anything about this team in recent years its that it plays its best football when all looks lost. Like we dont have a chance.

People are forgetting the Bloods oath that the players took earlier in the year.

If you listened to Tadgh being interviewed after the match he brought it up - that the club has its own brand of 'Shinboner Spirit'.

Apart from the lack of an out and out superstar like Carey, this team has a similar feel to it that of the Kangaroos of 1996. After a few near misses they finally went the next step.

If we can win the Qualifying Final in Adelaide two years ago when we had massive injuries and then lost players throughout the course of the game then we can win any game we contest.

We have been disadvantaged in first having to go to Perth and then play on a slippery SCG. Give us good conditions on Friday night and we should be doing good.

Saying that we need Barry Hall to get into the game and find the football.

Dont forget, alot of the Saints are playing hurt especially Big Frase.

Brett Kirk epitomises the spirit of the club and he aint going to let us down.

Then after we win, dont be surprised how quiet the Saints fans get.

Winning a flag comes second for me to the enjoyment of having players like Kirk, NOG, B1, B2 etc in our team.
