    Bag Roos? Read This!

For those of you who just want to have a go at the coach, have a read of
    this .

It never ceases to amaze me how people just can't stand success. Roosy's stuck to his plan since he took over, and we've been reaping the benefits of his leadership ever since.

So if you hate the fact he's our coach, you going to have to find a way through your disappointment for a few more years to come.

      Hmmn,

I never said I hated the coach or doubted his ability. I said I thought he was an arrogant sod and a bit of a **********. I don't see anything in that article contrary to that perception. There is the "he has the respect of the players" quote from "one club source". Always a reliable source that one, but I can see why s/he chose to remain anonymous - a potentially inflammatory statement for sure.

Why are people so damned precious?

I couldn't care less about your opinion of Roos.

What I couldn't understand about your orginal argument is that you were basically suggesting that Roos should have been giving head to Nick, a player who only in the last few weeks has begun to show what he is capable of. The time for platitudes is after the GF. Nick Davis more than any other player in the team needs his feet kept firmly on terra ferma.

Not sure what it means to be "an arrogant sod", and I don't understand this word, **********.

Let's just go with arrogant. Obviously, you've never had personal dealings with the guy. In my mind, it's amazing someone who has accomplished as much as he has, is as down to earth as he is.

I would personally appreciate a coach who approaches his players the way he does. The guy isn't out giving a spray every 10 minutes, so when you do actually cop one it has so much more meaning.

There is one glaring comment that contradicts your opinion. Its the one where Paul Roos states that he is NOT a career coach, the one where he doubts very much that he will coach any other team than Sydney.

That one statement shows that he is NOT arrogant. He is NOT selfish, or self-centred. He doesn't care for the personal glory, its not about him at all. Its all about the team. And culture starts from the top. You could hardly have created a team with such a strong team-ethic, if you were an arrogant **********. Players like Kirk, Maxfield, Nicks and Buchanan would long ago have been discarded... why? Because their greatest attribute was their contribution to the team culture. An arrogant, success-driven, selfish coach (like Choco for example) would have punted them a long time ago, because they dont have enough talent to deliver the coach success.

Futhermore, watch Roos demeanour in the box. He remains calm and collected. He is there for the team, he knows they rely on him. That is the opposite of arrogance.

Compare that to Ron Barassi, who has stated that if it came down to a choice between football and his wife, footy would win every time.

There is another comment that suggests that it is a little bit about personal glory:

"If I had won (a Premiership) would I have come back to coach? I don't know, I can't answer that," Roos said.

"That was one of the factors (that enticed him back into the game)..."

To me the whole story indicates that we have a coach who has the invaluable common touch and can be at home with all comers but at the same time can take the gloves off if necessary. A bit like the way he played.
And it helps that he knows a bit about football.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Bull********. Firstly, I was saying Roos should give credit where is due and that his own ego prevents him from praising others when he thinks he can capture the platitudes. And secondly, how many times have people mentioned that Davis is a confidence player. After a game like that on Friday he should be pumped up to the max, not ignored to get surly and sulky about the manner in which he is treated, or worse still lose confidence because he starts to question his own worth.

And for the other bollocks in this thread, how does not wanting to be a career coach have anything to do with his arrogance? There is no logic in that at all. Surely only the most arrogant would consider themselves so highly that AFL coaching is not a career for them, but merely a past time, and that they shall step in, win a flag for the club that has not won one since 1933, and then move on to perform other miracles in other walks of life.

Hey, I never said I begrudge him, the more personal glory / achievement he gets at the Swans the better it is for me!
