Yet another Vic hack with a computer and a column. So let me get this right, accountable footy is "ugly". Has he seen our midfielders.

I love our guys, but we don't have WC or St. K's midfield pace, but what we do have is the hardest midfield group in the comp.

Forgive my ignorance here, but we may not play beautiful footy for 120+ minutes, but after we've worn you down with our hardness at the footy we can pretty a game up damn quick.

        Re: Ugly footy?

All the purist gumpf being put forward by the football fraternity regarding this issue reminds me of the commentry when the Super 12 introduced new rules to Rubgy Union in an attempt to open up the game and encourage more attempts at scoring a try.

The big difference here is that it is utterly boring to watch someone like Wilkinson having kicking practice but watching good practitioners of tempo football (my preferred term) is enthralling. It even makes the fast breaks that occur all the more exciting IMHO.

I always wondered why it was supposedly interesting to watch a game just to see which spear head could kick straighter on any given day...

I'm also intrigued by those that choose to comment on this new style of play and seem to confuse it with flooding. Flooding may come in to it but there is alot more to it. Perhaps they should study the game they are payed to study a little closer.

So hard accountable footy is now ugly?

I thought that's what finals have always been about? Brisbane's success was due as much to their toughness at the ball as their skill level and I didn't hear anyone criticise the way they played 2001-2003.

Port Adelaide were criticised in that same period for not being hard enough.

          These hacks have no idea.

But I defy anyone to go to the tape and declare there wasn't a lot of unattractive rubbish played for the vast majority of these games.
Was he talking about the whole season? Because I thought the "Big Four" certainly served up some absolute tripe through most of the year. Heck even Port and Brisbane played rubbish in most of their games.

Or maybe he was referring to every finals series in memory?

Really, just how many games have had good clean football in wet conditions for the whole match?

A lot of my League supporting mates criticize our game because of the "ridiculously high scores" and "aerial ping pong" - quick transition of the ball from one end of the park to the other.

He should go and watch basketball if he wants end to end play with high scores and no defence .......

I note he also didn't mention that Adelaide has the lowest score against in the competition (and the lowest for 30 years) and that the Adelaide/St Kilda QF was lower scoring than our QF. Bit hard to blame Sydney flooding for that, I guess, so better just to ignore it.

You obviously don't watch much basketball...

Anyway, a lot of our game earlier in the year was ugly and that's not what got us into a preliminary final. In the second half of the season we played a combination of accountable, tight football with ability to run and attack. The first half of the season was ugly and not particularly effective. The second is closer to what I believe Roos thinks his game plan is meant to look like.

Nevertheless, compared to games of the past (and even many games now) a lot of AFL football, not just us but other teams too, is bereft of highlights that make AFL such a spectacle.

Really? Friday night not exciting enough?

Hey the game has changed for sure, but I have had die-hard rugby and league mates of mine tell me that Friday night was one of the most special sporting moments ever seen.

I think its currently (and always will be) an argument between "purists" (read people who started watching AFL in the late 70's or earlier) and "enthusiasts" (who just love to watch their team play and win). The former still craves a particular element of what they enjoyed watching as a kid, whether it be high-flying marks, or big biffs, or muddy ovals. The latter thinks its a lot of pointless nostalgia.

Friday was exciting because it was unbelievably close, but besides some great goals from Davis, it wasn't exactly full of highlights (even given the wet ground).

It's not about nostalgia, it's about watching a game that is spectactular in itself, not just because your team wins.

Up until the last quarter it was probably the worst game of the year, unless kicking 10 behinds in a row, dropping marks, missing targets is what you classify "exciting".

On the way out of the ground last week (& still a little pumped I must confess) I saw Andy D & his posse hanging out the back of the Bradman Stand. I shouted out "Was that pretty enough for you Andy?"

He chose to ignore me which was probably a good decision for both of us.

To be honest, when we were struggling I think it was more a skills issue than a change style of play.
