    The Hand Shake

It's been viewed a few times since Friday night.

I have seen Goodesy do it all year and it fills me with pride that Goodesy is a Swan. Never seen an opponent decline until Friday night.

It was discussed on WLF and Parko (senile by the day) suggested that he had every right to decline and it doesn't happen now days and blah blah. I was a bit disappointed in the old thug but shoud have known better.

One of my top 5 favourite moments from season 2005 was Round 1 when the Dons and the Dees were ready to run out for the Broadbridge Tribute game, Robo and Johnno just put their arm around each other (for a second) as the emotion got to them prior to running out. Puts a lump in my throat now and made me cry at the time seeing it the first time.

Powelly, you're a fool and will forever be remembered as a mindless goon. Though playing like a wombat and losing was probably punishment enough!

I thought it was pretty poor form at the time. I've seen/heard quite a few people since suggest it was okay as he doesn't have to shake hands, but I still think it was pretty poor form.
I was watching the game with my 4 1/2 year old son and he hit me with a barrage of questions about the incident.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

It's just good old fashioned manners to shake hands with your opponent before, and AFTER, a match.

But if you want to be an ill-mannered so-and-so, don't shake and do the bumping, slashing trick ... It wins you lots of admirers!

Parko has completely lost it now days. He's been going off the rails for a few years now.

It's just bad sportsmanship on Powell's part. Made the victory even sweeter.

As revealed on WLF last night, Saints went in with a plan to rough up our best players. Makes you wonder what wasn't captured on the cameras prior to Barry's love tap.

When he retires it will probably be the incident he is
remembered for. Not much to show for an AFL career.

It's not like you're obliged to make an offer to shake your opponent's before the game, but surely if your opponent offers his hand to you, you would shake it. It's just an issue of good sportsmanship - shake the guy's hand, then get into the push and shove.

              It just shows Goodesy's class.

              I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

I agree with this - no one expects you to shake hands (any more) but to refuse when the hand is proffered is ridiculous.

Anyway, something he felt he had to do - I've a sneaky suspicion Goodes will be remembered as a footballer a lot longer than Powell will be.

I do disagree about Parko tho - one of the elder statesmen that I genuinely admire and enjoy.

I'll also remember him for when he was wearing the Dees colours and played on from a mark 5 metres from goal and scored. The umpire didn't give the goal and called it back for the set shot. On some angle but so close...he missed it.

Either way, he'll be remembered as a tool.

Serious? He's starting to remind me of Waldorf, one of the old Muppets sitting in the wings that used to nod his head incessently and heckle.

I think Parko is going senile (burst too many blood vessels in his head when coaching) but he's right when he said on WLF that he sees as much punching like that going on in every game.

He and Wayne Campbell had a very sensible approach to the issue last night. Thompson was just being a sook.

I have no problem with anyone not wanting to shake hands BEFORE the game, even if offered.

This is high stakes football, not croqeut, and you have to use every trick in the book to get a psychological advantage.

It wasn't so much that he refused to shake hands but the way he refused. I hope his mum gave him a lecture afterwards.

I understand, but still have no problem with it. This sort of niggle goes on ALL the time. Just watch BBBBH when a backman gets too close...
