What is the deal with the league U18 B & F . Who scores this ?UNESW , East Coast and St George U18 B & F and Players Player's were not even top of there clubs in the final polling. My mate at ST George told me that Michael Holmes finished second in the league B & F but didnt even reach double figures in the club vote and the top 2 Macdougall and Santarossa and the east coast top 2 didnt even get past 5 and 6 in the U18 league votes , just what do the judges look at or does holmes and others have friends in high places

I cant comment on the other clubs but Michael Holmes played 8 first grade games which gave others the opportunity to poll votes.
Also Michael most definately polled in double figures in the 18's count and from memory finished in the top 4.
You must also remember that the debacle that was the 18's comp this year saw less games. Michael is a very good footballer who plays in key positions(Ruck/CHF) thats why he polled well and he will play a lot of senior football next year(like he has over the last 2 seasons). -
Homer is a terrific young guy - I saw quite a few of his games this year and have watched him for many years as he played against my son. He has a ton of guts and give 100% every game.
He also represented NSW in the under 17's Australian Cricket championships.
The notion that he has friends in high places is a bit far fetched.
Mind you Chris Mack and Santa are great players and both had good yearsSeptember 24th, 2005 5.14pm
What a great moment in all of our livesComment

Isn't this just the result of the Umpires giving the votes in the league medal and the club voting being done by people close to the teams that probably have knowledge of different jobs players are asked to do. Nothing against the umpires but I would hazard a guess and say that on a lot of occasions you could lok at the votes and the vote getters would correspond with players that did well in the last quarters of games.
Club people may also expect higher standards from certain players so that a game that an umpire beleives is worth votes a club person might think that the individual had not been at his best even though he was probably better than others.
This is just the nature of the beast.Comment

From my experience the captain generally gets noticed the most by umpires and generally polls better than he ought to. Who is the captain at St George U18s??? The umpires would know Hlomes is a gun and the same will apply.
Is it fair the say the U18s umpires are least talented and thus their ability to to pick good votes may be diminished as well? Look at the AFL, often one of the favourites for the Brownlow dosent poll much at all.Comment

I am not saying Holmes is a bad player or bad bloke by all acounts he seems to be a good young kid its just how do you run in the top 4 when out voted by others at the club and playing 8 first grade games.Comment

Winners in the last 10 years have been blokes like Kipper, The Ghost & Dougy Shultz (twice)who are all good blokes all have a bit of a profile in Sydney but none of her played particularly well or polled particularly well in the club b& f in those seasons and all looked embarrassed accepting the award.
Unfortunately the quality of umpiring in Sydney falls away so quickly after the top 10 or 12 that the reserves b & f is an award for good blokes.Comment

It probably does but I am not as aware of it as I dont know many of the U/18 players so it is not as obvious to me.
But it is the same logic isnt it.Comment

Personally I have never given much time to umpires votes in general. I remember the team mates of a recent Phelan medal winner sitting around laughing at how such a "spastic" got votes.......and he polled poorly in his own teams B+F.
IMO, the AFL has it over the NRL in so many areas but I do like the concept behind the Dally M awards. That is, a judge is assigned to each game to give the votes. Usually a former great or respected journo but always someone who knows footy. The refs have enough on their plates and this allows them to concentrate on what the are good at....refereeing.
I like tradition and do not suggest for one minute the Brownlow ever be altered. But to think the man voted the best player of the 20th century, Lethal Leigh, never won a Brownlow says a lot to me.Comment

My problem with him...and you see it on the GF DVD is that he gets lots of the ball, but turns it over nearly half the time that he disposed of it. I always think that it doesn't matter how much ball you get its how you use it.Does God believe in Atheists?Comment

Coastel boy, the st george under 18s captain was Kieran Donohue , and I am told that he was selected by his peers for his on (and off) field leadership..
I think he got the second most st george votes for the association medal but didn't figure in the crows 18s medals......Comment
