    what do the eagles want??

glad to say i have finally found an SFL site to discuss issues in the game.

my enquiry centres on a tape of an old east coast game i was watching recently. (with the lack of footy action on the box now i have reverted to re-runs it seems)

what the hell does 'want it eagles' mean? there seems to be a group of pelicans who holler this catchcry at a disturbing regularity. having been out of the game a while i don't know if it still continues but fair dinkum i reckon i heard this well over 100 times in the game i was watching. does it really need to be said that much?

i have a bit to do with the music industry and royalty payments and i reckon the eagles might be onto something here. perhaps if they could trademark it and perhaps put out a line of merchandise for the club then it would increase their coffers (although with their spending the last few years i don't think that's an issue).

if this still happens in the games today i'd like a dollar for every time the immortal words have been hollered anyway.

    thoughts?

    Shrek,

Not much has changed, Village Green still echo's those words as well. The disgruntled spectators sometimes appear to have more 'grunt' than there players.

    Sorry ECE forum members

Agree with the above... that catch cry can get very annoying!

Word from the Peanut Factory is that Loopy (ex St George & Cardiff) is staying with ECE for some solid $$$

Penno appointed new coach this week. Bloke by the name of Mick Cousens. Wonder how much $$

Creative writing by Campbelltown with numbers at preseason at about 15 and not 30 as published.
Also why is the Great Garns pictured wearing a Crows jumper on the Towners new Sydney AFL website?

Have St George opened up the purse strings $$$ this year with a few recruits???

Why has the Wests website not been updated since grand final week.... its funny but they were so quick to update the website when a GF looked theirs for the taking throughout the whole season!!!

Are the doggies looking for a coach? Luffy still there? My word he might not be!!!

Stay tuned... more word from the Peanut Factory to come out next week....

From my knowledge there is only one person who calls out "want it eagles'. He use to call out "want it baulko" in days gone by. Other forum regulars probably dont want to touch this topic because from I know he is a great guy from a respected family and regulars dont want to offend. It is terribly old hat and boring though. But it is characters like this that make footy interesting and playing ECE would not be the same without hearing those words. Good on him for being passionate for his club. Other clubs are probably jealous.......

From a complete outsider's point of view I'd say it was short for
"do you want it Eagles " i.e. Are you committed and eager !
            give it to the game

I was under the impression it was a Walies thing.

Seems to pop up at all the sports at UniGames, especially at team sports like softball and baseball. It's more about the fire within -- you have to want the ball in order to succeed.

Don't know if the UNSW-ES club says it much, but it's definitely a uni thing.

              Just my two cents worth.
And you can't find nothing at all,
If there was nothing there all along.

OK srek nawec, just checked your username and am curious what you've got against the Anglicans?
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Seems like the comp will be even out further in 06.
C/Town picking up a few - Garner / Parker / Webb already adds a bit.
St George signing Dugmore and Halls will assist them greatly with proven goal kickers.

                  Early prediction
If C/Town can get a key forward they will be mighty tough to beat out at Mornach. Should see them finish around the four.
Same to be said with St George, but maybe with a ruckmen.

Anyone know how the Gong are going with recruits ?
They could really be a force - win all their home games ala West Coast / Freo a finals spot awaits ????

                    Big $$$

I was just wondering wheather peanut or any other forum members could tell me where I could find the player payments for each player in the SFL is available? It is with great amusement I read that X player is on big $$$ at such and such a club. I am interested on reading some factual documentation on what big $$$ is. If the roos or St George or the eagles want to spend big $$$ to improve their side to benifit the standard of football in Sydney I say good luck to them.

The league (via Anthony Dignan) did a benchmarking exercise a few years ago showing the financial breakdowns on average but that excluded the traditional brown paper bags as us creative accountants tend to use. Perhaps you can request that report from them as a base. You can divide the player payments amount by 20 and multiply by 30-50% to get the range for the highest paid player.

That said, I have heard that the Sydney AFL have put a salary cap of $3.25M per club for season 2006 after the re-negotiation of Friday night TV rights on Fox Footy channel. This is a 5% increase on 2005 levels due to ratings being significantly higher than Channel Nine's league coverage!!

Who really cares what players get paid anyway?? Good luck to those clubs that can recruit/attract players to their clubs that will enhance their onfield performance - good administrators will find the cash to fund players. Also, you would be surprised how many players go to clubs for nothing at all & do so purely to play in a competitive team or to play with a mate.

I don't think you will find that info given the new privacy laws...there is no way that publication of that would be allowed, in the same way there are always rumours as to what AFL player contracts are but there is no factual evidence available.

Regarding player payments it is interesting that all but 1 or 2 clubs do not provide group certificates and have all player payments above board. I realise when deductions are taken into account most payments would not be taxed anyway but it probably should still be done properly.

Without any insider knowledge I would say in the SFL the "paying" clubs would offer at least $100 per win for any first grader. Good players would get $300 per win and the top few above $500. No player would get $1000 per win but playing coaches would get something like that. If you say the average is $250 per win for say 12 wins for 20 players thats $60K per year. Some clubs would spend a lot less on players but obviously some would spend more...

That is a big call saying that Campbeltown shall go from wooden spoon to top 4 after just picking up 3 key players. Who else have they picked up?

Has anyone signed any big names for the 2006, or any movement from club to club?

Peanut Factory has it on good authority that ECE Match Payments total well above $100k...

Thus ECE well done...you have the best off field admin of any club in Sydney and if you can generate sponsorship through your numerous fundraisers and hardworking president & committee then why not spend it.
