I would find it extremely hard to believe that east coast or any club in the Sydney Football League would be paying well over $100K to fund players. A conservative figure of say $120K, hardly well over $100K would equate over the 16 rounds to $340 per player per round. From my experience in football this would place the league as one of the highest paying comps in Australia, outside the main state competitions. Surely this is over the odds. I think Wests is the only club associated with poker machines, how could clubs in Sydney generate these type of payments ?

I agree House. $100k is a lot of money and would include the coaches slary as well. I would be very surprised if any club spent over $125K on players and coaches. I would have at a guess that some clubs such as St George would be lucky to spend $20K but they remain competitive. All clubs would have to issue a report each year outlining expenditure as they are non-profit organisations so it would not difficult to get the figures for all clubs really. When clubs can spend mega bucks and miss the semis and other teams spend next to nothing it gives an insight into what drives a club and what is necessary for success. Money is important but not absolutely essential.

Peanut ... you really are living up to your name.

If you care to get yourself a copy of the ECE Year Book for 2005, which carries all financial records as required by the Dept of Fair Trading for incorporated sporting bodies such as ourselves, you will see that the payment made for coaching and player payments in 2005 was $75,202 to be precise. Out of total income generated of $217,529.

This Year Book is freely available to anybody and in fact the Presidents of all other Premier League Clubs have a copy. 300 were printed and distributed on Club Champion Night. You must have obtained the only copy with errors in it.

I would be quite happy to show our entire Financial report on here but was unable to format it correctly.

I am yet to see anyone elses Annual Report or similar for 2005 by the way. That's not a criticism, just an observation.

It is amazing how such a small percentage of incorporated bodies actually submit these reports as required by the law. Of greater concern is how the Dept don't actively chase them up either. Clubs would be alot more "professional" if they met their reporting obligations.

Coastal, St George didnt spend $20k last year. The club spent $3,800 total on players.

This has probably helped us be very active this off season.

For what its worth, Cardiff spent none!

Are there any Division 1 clubs that pay players in Sydney? (or are rumoured to etc)
From what i've seen/heard the turnovers are similar so just curious.

A number of country comps in Victoria would be paying that sort of money to their players...it is the only way they can keep players. So its not just the main state comps that are paying money like that. But I will be happy to stand corrected if I'm wrong

When I was involved with the Goannas in SFA the only payments were to the coaches - basically to cover costs such as mobile phone bills. All players had to pay their membership subscriptions or couldn't play no matter how good they were - one year we almost had to forfeit ressies because the playing group didn't realise how serious we were.

The club was very big on running social functions at a small financial loss (based on low ticket/drink prices) so all players/members could enjoy the comraderie/mateship & all share in the financial viability of the club thanks to generous sponsors.

Yes plenty. A lot of players expect to be paid or they go to premier league. Anyone can tell me this is not the case but I have seen plenty of it over the years. Unis in particular. Im not going to name name but many high profile div 1 players iver played with and against have been paid. Problem is when the money runs out so do they.

Was that in the Ron Thomas era?

Because I was under the impression that plenty was spent to win those premierships.

with blokes running around in Div 1 the past couple of years, namely Burnett, Allie, Free, Fitzpatrick(all capable of playing Prems at the time) methinks there was some coin floating around. We pay in land and turf.its only fair.
