Certainly at SFA level the on-field standard is much much lower and SFL is average at best - I reckon it would struggle to make B grade amateurs in Melbourne.

I wish I could have read Eddies text.
Like Eddie I want to know where the 30 million is spent.
Thing is there are a multitude of different issues running around.
Biggest issue in Inner Sydney is ground availability (and keeping the grounds they've got in decent nick during the drought), junior clubs like Easts and a few others are turning kids away because they only have one ground available to them and can't fit any more. School footy both junior and senior is picking up as well.
However St. George and down south and out west are struggling with some junior clubs disappearing.
Premier league cycles around depending on which clubs get decent money that year.
The SFA continues to not be taken seriously.
I reckon if those senior execs. took a decent pay cut, moved out of their Eastern suburbs mansions and out in the real world, putting some of that cash into the problems listed above, employ some decent administrators rather jobs for the boys that might help considerably.Comment

You reckon it is really THAT bad? I went to North Shore-Wests the other day & found the standard pretty decent to be honest.

In reality SFA seniors is somewhere between SFL seniors and reserves, admittedly the reserves in SFA can be hit and miss, but even there and in 2nd division there are good players.
I would, however, agree that ten years ago the standard across the board was probably higher.
I have no knowledge of Melbourne local footy, but don't feel that comparison is one that can be made. I don't think in a similar vein I would compare the local Melbourne Rugby League comps with Jim Beam Cup or Group footy in NSW.
We know that the QAFL is fairly high standard, but what of the lower divisions up there? Does anyone have any inside knowledge, would be interesting to compare a similar type region.I hear not what you say, for the thunder of who you are.Comment

Another experience to think about. My nephew has just started playing Aussie Rules for the Bulldogs in the Hills comp. What I thought was odd was that training for a 10 year old did not start until 6.30pm. I remember my junior days where training was finished by this hour. I would suggest it is a product of the mum and dad coaches not getting home from work until this hour or the parents for the kids not at home until this time to drive them to training.
I can understand if parents just did not have the time to let their kids play footy these days. After all, not home till after 8.30pm does not leave time for things like homework or dinner. A new dilemma of the world we live in.Comment

Reading your post CB triggered another thought about coaching ranks in that it's hard enough to get good volunteers into the game but they need good training to turn them into good coaches.
There was a thread about training courses a few weeks back that pretty much summed that up. There was meant to be a coaches mentoring scheme up and running earlier on this year as well, that still hasn't got off the ground.
End result it that it takes a long time and a lot of trial and error to turn willing volunteers into good coaches, where it shouldn't be so hard.Comment

SFL = Sydney Football League
SFA = Sydney Football Assocation
Two different leagues of footy in Sydney, had been named that way for a loooong time. SFL generally recognised as the higher standard league but over the years the standards have wavered and they were often quite close.
THEN, a few years back AFLNSW did what any manager does when they want to put up a facade of progress things happening/moving forward, while actually doing nothing (or worse, going backward), they changed the names of the leauges to
SFL = Sydney AFL Premier Division
SFA = Sydney AFL First DivisionComment

Boroboy - Woody's correct on the 2nd division in its current guise.
However just to further reinforce the Bang Up job the AFL is really doing up here 2nd Div used to be a Division in its own right. Teams in included Bankstown, Liverpool, Hawkesbury, Camden and others. These teams gradually wre promoted to Div 1 but unfortunately none other that Camden exist to this day and even Camden play in another league. The number of teams that have disappeard over the last 15 years is a sad indication of the great job being done up here.Comment

Is it unfair to say that the NSWAFL may well have the perfect blueprint for the future of footy in this state but given their track record even if this was so they would not be make a success of it?Comment
