I would agree that with the point about grounds being so dry & hard - I think the ole Dunlop Volleys may get a run sometime this year if we don't get any rain. A real shame that grounds didn't have bore water systems installed years ago.

Such a contrast to the wet season we had in 1989 when it felt like half the games were cancelled & councils would cope earfuls for closing grounds on Friday afternoons - even the rest of the country would ridicule us for not playing in the wet.

It's also having an effect with injuries etc - there seem to be quite a few more impact-related injuries from what I've seen so far at the younger levels (16s, 18s). Is there a similar trend in the top comps?

Agree with that, saw a cracked wrist a week or two ago in a fairly innocuous incident where player was pushed off the ball and landed on the palm of his hand as he fell to ground.

I have seen a few more shoulder injuries than normal this year ... but I think there have been less knee & ankle injuries.

That doesn't surprise me - a lot of knee and ankle injuries are to do with planting the foot in softer ground and sticking with the body going in another directions.

On Saturday night Henson Park was not in as good a state as you may have thought from sitting in the stands. There was a great deal of unevenness all over the ground; potentially a surface that would mean turned ankles etc etc. It was extremely spongey down the Illawarra Road end around the half forward area. Obviously the drainage is crap.

It is a shame that the ground doesn't have a better surface, especially on the rather chopped up cricket pitch area. Because if it did, it would be getting AFL pre-season fixtures. It would be a far far far more useful ground to hold them on that North Sydney as well, given its size and potential to hold over 30000 spectators.

Jules, compared to a couple of weeks back, the ground was in good condition on Saturday, but still deteriorated even over the course of the 1st match (the Redbacks vs St George). No doubt by the 4th match of the day it would have been a right mess. But having said that, it was mostly quite dry compared to previous weeks - 2 weeks back there was one spot on the wing near the bench on the right of the players' gate (looking from grandstand to field) that you actually sank into it, it was that wet despite the rest of the ground being completely dry. It's a soft top layer, which is why it ends up looking like crap each week, but still very hard underneath.
