Umpire Standards

Howdy,

JUst voicing my opinion on the vast difference in umpire standards in premier division.

There are clearly 4-5 standouts. Unfortunately it drops off quite significantly. Maybe BMR you should rank the umpires each week.

The holding the ball rule as per usual is the most contentious as each umpire interprets it differently- or should I say the good ones v the poor.
If a player has opportunity, then attempts but misses- holding the ball?

By number/name who are the top 3 umpires in the comp?

IMO the most dubious rule is the new "defender cannot touch a player who has marked the ball".

When it gets hairy is when the attacking player takes a mark/frree kick but the ball pops out and lands forward/sideways of the contest. Very often the defender is left with no option but to let the attacker play on because if he defends "the mark" position the umpire will give a 50m penalty. A little difficult to explain but I am sure you know what I mean.

At SFL level I see at least one penalty of this nature a week. Clear the rule up or scrap it.

I would have to agree. After seeing both the North Shore and Eagles games on the weekend it is very obvious that there is no consistency in the holding the ball calls. The Eagles V St George game in particular was a disgrace. Both teams received shocking disicissions all day and both teams frustraions were evident.

If NSW football is to go forward, the umpiring standards need to be improved and more imortantly consistent across the board.

Who came up with the brainwave of rating SFL ahead of Premier Reserves and providing SFL better umpires??
I have watched both levels this year and the standards aren't even close.
Premier Reserves are a lot more physical and it concerns me to watch umpires send off players for pushing, yet players are belted head high after disposing of the footy and these weak thugs get away with it.
About time the league used some initiative and improved the umpiring standard or somebody will get badly hurt.

I understand your thoughts but quite simply you have abviously watched very little 1st Div footy. The umpiring standard week in week out is pathetic. There are very few umpires worth their pay packets.

I take it from your opinion that Prem Div ressies should get umpires ahead of Seniors in 1st Div. Do you realise that this would most likely lead to more than a few games without any offical umpires at all.

Also as far as standards go - There is a huge gulf between both Divisions first grade sides due to the level of training etc but to rate Ressies in Prem ahead of Seniors in 1sts shows a lack of experience watching either these competitions or a complete bias towards Prem Div.

I have only played 1st div but a various stages have trained with Prem Div clubs for a number of reasons and was always suprised that the skill level amongst non senior players wasnt what I expected from what was generally regards as a better standard.

I can assure you that this year, two permier reserve teams would beat every team in division 1 and two or three others would be highly competitive.....

Umpire are umpires and are going to be bad no matter where you go. I have actually found the umpiring alot more consistant this year. They are rewarding players who are first to the ball and protecting the players with the ball. This is just from what ive seen.

Joe I can accept two as I would expect the strong clubs to be strong accross all grades. Three others to push hard maybe. Which clubs would these be. I assue Penno and East Coast to the the two who would take on all comers and Norths and Easts to be two of the other three. The reamaining 5 I have my doubts. I would expect Sydney Uni, UTS and Manly to be more than competitive against most Prem Div ressies and against a hell of a lot of first grade sides as well. Sydney Uni I dont believe are physical enough but UTS and Manly are. Manly however wouldnt have the fitness to go with most prem Div sides.

Yea East Coast and Penno are the two strong ones and Norths and Uni arent too far behind. The third one i threw in there would be Wests but they are very inconsistant. So it probably is 4 teams. It would definitely be intresting to see a proper game between either penno or east coast versus UTS, Syd Uni or Manly cause im sure it would be a good game but i do think penno or east coast would win in the end.

Joe I agree wholeheartedly although I believe that the three sides mentioned would cause more than a few upsets against some of the first grade sides. Dont agree with Wests unless they have really improved on the way they train as a team over the past few years.

Come on now Joe D you cant be serious???? The consistancy from week to week from the umpires is no less than a joke!! There are only a hand full that are up to standard.

How about we put some of the money that is obviously not going to go into fox footy coverage next year into getting some first class umpires or atleast developing the ones we have????

Teams like ECE, Wests and St George ect. are obvioulsy trying to improve the professionalism of sydney footy which is a great thing. But to do so all facets of the game will need to be improved, including umpiring
