      Just for the Record,
The figure of 100k is extremely inflated as what it is costing the AFL to have the Show produced for the season. The production is a labour of love by a few people who have been involved with Sydney Footy for a number of years.
Feedback from Fox Footy is very favourable about the broadcast and I asure you if it was not up to standard they would have no problem pulling the show.(as they did with individual episodes in the shows infancy)
Fox Footy provide the air time at no cost.
Most feedback is that the production is of acomparible standard to what airs on the ABC, in footy states, for their local comps using significantly more cameras and funding.
Clubs use the show as an opportunity to generate pretty good sponsor ship dollars.
Again the money spent by the league is no where near the 100k quoted and after costs the production struggles to break even

I think most clubs are happy that at least one SFL match is on friday night prime time. I am sure it is pretty good bargaining tool when you tell a potential/current sponsor that they will be given state wide exposure for there brand.

The mythical $100k figure you mention in total and which Kanga broke down to $6k per club would be a lot less than what clubs are trying to receive back from sponsors for the coverage.

Also with regard to the top 6 players in the best each week, i dare say that the coaches from each side nominate the best.So it is a fair guide by which BMR uses.

Do pay TV stations publicises ratings figures?

I would like to know how many people actually watch it and what exposure the league is getting for whatever they are paying?

Humphrey according to the league there are no ratings provided for any Fox shows so noone would really know.

Ive got mates who are big swans fans, that watch the SFL game each week on a friday. They come from a league background and think its great that we can get on Fox.

              Woodsy,
No offence taken. As I have previously stated we are all enitled to an opinion and if we all agreed on everything it would be a boring old world. Your comments were obviously not personal attacks (which are a whole different story). The purpose off my post was more to make sure that people realised that the money spent on the production is quite minimal before we had people getting over excited about how much the league are spending.

              Humphrey,
We to would like to be able to access the ratings numbers but unfortunately Fox can only provide Subsciption numbers across the different channels and as far as we can establish they don't actually keep ratings. They are mainly interested in subscription dollars.

Again your shortsightedness. ALso, how can a footballer really know who is best on a given day? Really, many are lucky to know how to do their shoelace. No disrespect to the players that can.

                Are you a current "player"?
Sorry Ash, I thought by me stating that I played in those games would have meant that your question wasn't necessary. I was obviously mistaken.

Yes, I am a current player (but I fear that I_Heart is being far too kind).

I would imagine they are extremely interested in ratings (what people watch) as this is what drives their ability to sell subscriptions - that is exactly why they have decided to bankroll the A-League to such an extent.

I imagine though that they keep this information very very close to their chest.

They must have the figures somewhere as they also sell advertising on every channel.

I would imagine perspective advertisers would like to know exactly how many people are going to see their product before they pay for the advertising.

Humphrey you might be suprised by how those figures tend to get misrepresented when it comes to selling advertising. Many magazines would claim to have hundreds of thousands of readers where the reality is the audited figures show only 30 to 50K in actual copy sales. Also even if those figures are audited they are ways to manipulate the system to pump them up (believe me, take it from someone who looks on creative accounting as an artform) auditors arn't always the brightest sparks.

ABC2 on digital tele shows lots of local footy nearly every night including the WAFL and VFL. Might that be an option for the SFL?

                        Fox Footy

I may be way of the mark here (which many regular posters are), but what would be the possibility of creating a "footy show". Have a panel of people in the know and get players from each side to come in and discuss Sydney footy. Cut back the vision to snippets of the weekends games and focus more on promoting the game. This format is used in a fair few suburban leagues in Melbourne and is quite successful. Some of the shows have developed a cult following. I think it gives the people in Sydney a chance to see what opposition players are actually like instead of the 2 hrs they see them twice a year. Advertising could be incorparated into the show. This is just an idea to toss out there.

That sounds excellent, it would certainly work and do at least as much (probably more) than the current level of exposure is doing for local footy. If they are doing it in other regional leagues, why not up here?

Footage could be submitted by individual clubs, and included from all the games as well as (sorry Ash, but I care) results from the lower divisions.
I hear not what you say, for the thunder of who you are.

I agree with you on results for all grades including juniors as it would develop a sense of importance.

You can see the Swans have their show that they have copied from the Lions.

A format of 1/2 hour match of the round, snippets of the other 3 premier games, results and tables of all other grades.

Can bring up controversial topics and would be quite easy to record. A special guest player/coach each week followed by tips/reviews etc/

This would fit nicely into the hour and would attract more viewers as all premier teams would see highlights and juniors would get the buzz of seeing their names on tv.

In the late 70's/early 80's at half time of the old Channel 7 VFL match of the round they would bring in a player to the Channel 7 studios and do a quick interview with video highlights of 3 SFL games plus all the results and ladders etc

Not sure wether the same thing could be done now but its something.
