    Your Club's Unsung Heroes

Having followed the SFL for over ten years now it amazing to see the turnover of players from year to year. Hence the reason for me to write this post. I think each club has many unsung hero's which fly under the radar each year and they are not recognised for their loyalty and passion for their own Football club.
I would like to put up my first nomination of the Unsung Hero's club.

    UNSW-ES Bulldogs

Brad "Super" Abbott - Two time premiership player, 8 time B&F , 10 time leading goalkicker, 300+ games, top 10 in the Phelan Medal 9 times. Brad is a man's man, no one could say a bad word about Brad"Super" Abbott.

Brad congratulations on being nominated as Your Club's Unsung Hero.

How do you qualify as an unsung hero? If you win eight B & F's (pretty impressive performance by the way) I would have thought it would rule you out of the equation as being "unsung".

With 10 leading goalkicking awards, what would be his cumulative goal tally? Is it a club record (I remember that Ruscuklic kicked a swag in only 3 or 4 seasons).

Perhaps a separate topic, but does anyone know the league records on career goals in premier league/SFL? I would expect that J Hogarth would have the SFA record with over 1000 career goals.
See me run a marathon again as a leprechaun?

Rafters I will keep it simple for all our readers. To qualify you need to have achieved the following.

      - Currently be playing in a Premier division team.
      - Have played for that club for a minimum of 8 seasons.
      - Have played in at least one Premier Division Premiership with this team.

I think you will find it difficult to find many players that fit the criteria.

I can't think of any other than Brad"Super" Abbott.
There are few men like him.

Well being a Penno supporter we currently dont have any players that fallinto this category (sorry Clarkey, youve been here a while but your a spastic)

However, a player at St George, Gavin Raper, definately would be equal or if not more of a worthy recipient of this award.

Over my years watching the league he seems to go about his job each week. Doesnt score 10 goals a game or ever feature in Phelan.

I reckon most clubs would choose him over some of there Phelan Medallists who are usually individuals and sing there own praises.

Yes Abbott been good, but how bout a little guy like Brett Roberts? Now thats unsung.

Monty, you cant evenpick the winner from your own club

There wouldn't be many. Especially the requirement of a Premier Division premiership, which rules out people who have toiled week in week out for many years for a club which was struggling - Wests, Balmain, East Coast and St George haven't won a premiership in the last 8 years, but have some loyal and hard-working players who in their own way are unsung heroes.

"Super" is a very good player, but with a list of credentials as long as listed he is hardly unsung. Hasn't he also played rep footy.
Also don't see how winning a premiership contributes to a player being unsung. Surely a player who toils away in a struggling team for 8-10 years and doesn't win a flag is possibly more unsung.
I think the nominations of Raper and Roberts are pretty spot on as they are not the first players you think of when you go through their teams but they always do their jobs.
Also no self respecting Full Forward would want to be called unsung.
East Coast cannot fit a player into the nominated criteria not only because they haven't won a premiership but also because they are not 8 years old as a club (Baulkham Hills excluded). Two players that might fit in though if the rules were bent a little would be Rod Frost and Ryan Fitton. Not necessarily stars of the competition but they turn up each week and give you everything they have.

As soon as you get named as unsung you stop being unsung by definition.

Humphry, have you heard about this weeks match between East Coast and Pennant Hills? It's being played at Charles McLaughlin Oval (providing it doesn't have a drop of water on it as the council will close it). It is a day celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Falcons/Eagles senior club. The Eagles will be wearing the Maroon and Gold of the Falcons, and I am sure that the club and its members are well aware of its "miserable unsuccessful past", which is why they are so determined to succeed.

This could hardly be seen as denying the past and pretending it didnt happen...

Taking that point a touch further, the UNSW-ES merged club is less than 8 years old too, which rules Abbott out.

If you invent a criteria with a player already in mind, then of course he will be the perfect fit.

But you still seem to have failed, as Norris said UNSW/Easts are not more than 8 years old, so Abbott doesn't technically fit the criteria.

Chris Fretwell from Campbelltown would be a perfect candidate.
He fits all the criteria that has been mentioned. He played in a premiership with C'town under 18's in 1998, in a senior premiership the following year, has not played rep footy or won a B&F, but he is one of there best week in week out. So he has been there through premiership winning seasons and through a season when they didnt win a game, that would be my definition of a unsung hero.
