    League Standard

How do the well informed contributors of this forum think the current league compares to the mid 90s?

    My opinion.

Apart from 3-4 good players in each team, the competition is pretty much an U21 competition and most teams of the 90s which were a mix of youth and men would easily account for any of the current 9 teams.

The league is a good stepping point for young kids if they can get into afl system.

Some good comments there Ash. I don't remember much of the mid-90s, but you're right about this being mainly an U21 comp.
We seem to have a record number of U18s players making it into senior ranks this season. There's some good talent among them, and if they can stick around for a few years the standard should be well up when they've matured as footballers. But that remains to be seen - plenty of good players in the past have come through the ranks and then left for greener pastures elsewhere.

I actually didn't rate the mid-90s that highly ... thought the early 90s was significantly better in standard on a league basis ... however I think the rep team would be better now than then ... if that makes sense ... take out the top 25 players in the comp & it is a very average competition.

Interesting to note that I think it is only 4 kids out of the 16 rising star nominations up to this weekend who haven't been in one of the Rep sides for U16s or U18s this year
