Gosford Tigers defeat the undefeated Cardiff hawks

I can only assume Cardiff had quite a few players out. But either way, what a great effort by the tigers!!

Good work Gosford.

I really must be tough for side who usually dominate to be 'up' every week, especially when there is sometimes very soft oposition it could be tough when they come up against a tougher side.. Norwest have been very good at this.

They were actually missing 7 players that played the previous week against Killarney Vale, including rep players Mcmahon, Flynn, Ryan and Krake. Further to that, of the 21 players selected, 2 didn't show up (both who had played the previous week), leaving the team with 19 players, and 9 out's in total.

Just when things were looking grim...he decides to call one of the players to "swing by and grab it"...problem was he was already at about Wyong. So said player turns around on the freeway (with his 2 passengers in tow) and gets the gear- Absolutely no way possible he will make it in time. (by the way 2 of the 3 players were in both the rep team and the initial NSW country squad).
In the interim, the other 16 players present, start the game, wearing dirty Woy Woy jumpers from the previous match. They match Gosford up to half time, but then are completely knackered and the Tiges run riot in the second half (the other 3 turn up half way through the second quarter and they change into their own gear at half time).

In saying that- with all the players missing we were always going to be up against it. Gosford have a good, young, up and coming side. But...at full strength it should have been a comfortable win for us. Add in the other factors (no shows and the jumper debacle) and it ended up an embarrasing day for the club and a very frustrating one for a couple who put in an absolute bucket for the club.

And without tooting my own horn too much... those people are me and my wife

Sounds like a comedy of errors to me.
Said coach gets a fine to go towards the footy trip, methinks......

Weren't Singleton knocked back in a bid to join the seniors though, which would have made something like this unlikely to happen (rest of club would have been at Gosford as well?)

Cardiff isnt the only club thats had the issue about U/18s and 1st Division playing 2.5 hours away Gosford has had that issue several times with 1st playing at home and U/18s and 1st divison playing in newcastle or singleton

No Singleton didn't apply to join the first grade. There are 11 teams in first Division (reserve grade) and only 8 in the seniors, which creates the problem. The idea is that the other 3 clubs will have the chance to develop and join the senior comp (i.e play all 3 grades)

No, actually the only clubs that had a Singo/Coast split were Cardiff & Gosford and it has happened to both club's once.

A Coast/Newcastle or Newcastle/Singleton split is not overly difficult, as it is only an hours drive away. The point I was making is that it is not possible for a player to make it from Singo to the coast to play, due to the distance.
That was not, however the issue at hand regardless, as I had said. The issues were
1- 7 Players making themselves unavailable (you claimed it was 3)
2- 2 Players not showing up
3- 1 Coach forgetting gear
4- 3 Players turning around to get the gear, leaving the team 2 short on the paddock

As BeeEmmAre said, it was a comedy of errors, and we have to cop it. As I also said, Gosford played good footy, and took advantage of the fact that we were short by running us off our legs.

Funnily enough, if a certain board member had has way, we would have forefited. The Gosford affiliated board member called the GM to try and have him enforce that.
I'm sure, and i'm sure your players would agree, that it would have been much more satisfying for the players to knock Cardiff off rather than having to rely on a technicality. What are your thoughts?

Well Northern Swans all i can say is what your saying about players out is no what your coach told some of the ppl at the ground!

What technicality? we allowed you to play regardless of what jumper you played Gosford could of been total bastards and not let you play!

Well maybe the people responsble who the comedy of errors should of known better! especially when it comes to the jumpers thats one of the most important things for the team!

All this argueing is stupid i was going on the information everyone was told on the day.

I didnt put this thread on here to argue with anyone i just wanted to recognise that Gosford did something that no one else has got close to this year and believe it or not most of us were in shock for the scoreline

Is there ever a possibility of a Newcastle club joining the Sydney AFL to join Wollongong?

Hi All,
Thought I would join the debate about last Saturday's game.

Although I am a little biased as a Gosford Tigers supporter, I would have to say that the Tigers played a fantastic brand of football that would have troubled any Black Diamond Team on the day. They seemed to have a game plan, stuck to it, and continually caused errors from the Hawks. To use excuses as to why they were beaten is understandable coming from a team that has not been beaten this season, however we should not be niave to the fact that the Tigers are a young team on the way up, and would be expected to make dramatic improvements (even during a season).
It should be noted that the reason Cardiff has been so successful is that they have extremely good player depth. They are not a one or two man side, and therefore should still win the games against a side running sixth, even when they are short on players.
Comments from the Cardiff coach on the day expressed that the team he brought was good enough to beat us (or so they thought), and that they seemed to play worse when their full squad hit the paddock.
As for the comment that Cardiff matched it with Gosford until half time, I beg to differ. It may have shown on the scoreboard, but if you were there it showed Gosford clearly outplaying their opponents with intelligent football (they were just inaccurate).

With the average age of the Tigers around 20 years old, there Under 18's group leading their respective comp, and the spirit of this once struggling club at an all time high, it appears that there could be some successful years ahead if things pan out.

tigertank07- Can't disagree with anything you have said there mate, what I did disagree with was some of the "facts" being spun by J4E.
From what I hear your guys played some good footy and took advantage of the fact we were a shambles both on and off the paddock- not an excuse, but a fact.
Deitzy (Gosford U18 coach) and I have spoken about the emergence of Gosford as a future force in the BDAFL on many occasions both socially (over too many beers at Jets concerts) and at the rep game in Canberra where he was my assistant coach.
The club has many good young players who have stuck through the hard times and, if they remain together, will go close to winning the flag within the next few years (of course we will do our darndest to stop that from happening

) Gosford's climb is reminicent of Cardiff's from 10 years ago, where they finished stone motherless last in 1996 and made the granny the next year (and every year to date since), in the fact that they have largely relied from what is within the club to further their cause.
I applaud the Gosford footy club for not doing what some other clubs in the comp have done *cough*Bombers*Cough* and try to buy themslves a comp, only to see them go to the wall the next year.
Hopefully a win over the top of the tree, followed with a couple of good wins over the next few weeks, will be the spark to bigger and better things for the club.

Short answer
NO.

For it to work, there would need to be a club either leave the comp, or recruit 30 odd players of Sydney standard to facilitate the extra team. Given the tribalism in the comp, I would find it extremely unlikely that a player from, for example City or Warners Bay,would even contemplate playing for Cardiff, even if it meant the exposure in the SFL. And speaking for myself, if City or Warners Bay, for example, joined the SFL, I would find it very difficult to support the team on any level (that's not to say I wouldn't go to the occasional game as a curiosity factor)

On top of that, the clubs in Newcastle specifically, but the BDAFL in general, run on much smaller budgets than the SFL club's do, and there is only 1 club that i know of that pays any players. Given the extra costs for transportation, the need to pay players etc- at this point of time I think it would be outside the realm of most club's.

Besides all of that- the BDAFL is a pretty good standard comp anyway's.

What if they were to create a totally new team, so therefore no "tribal" affiliations as such? That could could then up opportunities for sponsorship etc which could help cover costs of transport etc etc? Totally hypothetical of course, but as has been pointed out, having a team from up north would be pretty good for the comp as a whole you'd hope.

Living in Country Victoria I have been reading this thread with interest. This is the same thought that I had, create a new club, under the auspices of the league, surely that would have some hope of working, and would help to improve the standard of footy in SFL and BDAFL players would have somewhere local to aim at rather than move to the city if they want to make it in the "bigger" time.
