New Coaches

Hall's signing is one of a few things:

* he is an ordinary coach & the crows had no intention of offering a contract;
* he was upset with how things were being run at the Crows & wanted out (starting to get a history of player coaches leaving for one reason or another); or
* the crows management are slack & didn't organise to sign a playing coach to a 2 year deal minimum.

Can you shed some guidance for what happended behind the scenes Shearer?

As for clubs chasing him, the Cairns footy league had a very good "poaching" rule which effectively stated that a player is off limits for 2 seasons once signed.

Its club policy to advertise all positions at the end of each year so like myself, Damian would of had to apply again and then its up to the committee.

I dont know why he has chosen Balmain as his new club of choice but good luck to him, i hope he does well.

p.s. Rafters as for that Cairns poaching rule, some clubs in the SFL would be absolutely @@@@ed if they couldnt poach players.

I can't comment on his coaching ability, but would have to disagree with your opinion of his playing ability. I think he's a very handy player. Also a pretty good bloke (although very lippy on the field, but there's no harm in that). Can't work out why so many clubs - perhaps Hall Data is struggling and he's chasing coin....

I think it's fair to say his coaching philosphy would centre around "do as I say not do as I do". He plays like a haemophiliac!

At Penno, we do tag him vigilantly as does every other team.

As for coaching, although Im not privy too what goes on behind doors, I can only go on results and St george did play some very attractive football at times this year. We were glad to see a few of their players missing in semi which had a significant bearance on the result.
Rafters may be onto something though.

Not sure if the list of candidates has been narrowed yet but I entirely agree with your comment Woodsy. It is a great opportunity for someone to reap the rewards for all the groundwork that has been done by the committee & the local community. Don't forget that the AFL & NSW cricket & Govt are pumping signifcant dollars over the next few years to a very good ground as well.

Absolutely nothing to lose for the person willing to have a go, but tremendous upside.

On this topic, would either Balmain or Wests be a little upset of the league talking about the good junior development in the Sydney Uni catchment area. Apparently both teams have worked hard to improve the junioy footy in the area and wont want their efforts to be channelled elsewhere.

Isn't the university itself really their "junior recruitment"?? I would have thought that their future lies in uni students coming from the rest of the state & country each year & enrol in a course. I reckon all the kids playing in the area should continue to go to Balmain or Wests. I wouldn't be worried about it CB.

Don't see that as a conflict at all - Newtown is a fair distance from Ashfield or Drummoyne and Sydney Uni are the logical feeder team from this district. Also, I believe Sydney Uni are the only team to have shown any great interest in the area, again probably because they are seen as the logical "sponsor" of this junior club.

I dont know but have heard that the previosly mentioned teams have already been doing a lot of work in that area. Does Glebe have a comp or teams???

Thats good. As long as the powers dont turn around and say there are two new junior clubs in the inner city, they can combine with these other existing clubs incl. Glebe and now be Sydney Uni juniors. Sounds silly I know, but many years ago Bankstown used to be in the Wests catchment area when they suddenly became under St George.

The Sydney AFL website under the Syd Uni story notes:

"? Active junior programs and strong growth prospects"

Who has been providing the active junior programmes to date? I dare say it isnt those at Sydney Uni or the AFL alone but actually in conjunction with other SFL clubs. ie Balmain and Wests.

The "owner" of Bankstown Juniors was Bankstown Football Club not We$ts. Bankstown then merged with Liverpool and the juniors should have gone with the nerged club of the SWS Magpies.

Instead the NSWAFL said "no you cannot keep your junior club" and decided who should get it, hence Bankstown Juniors being fought over.

Fair enough that We$ts look after #1 but please don't misrepresent the truth and make out that We$ts have any moral right to this club as you can bet your bottom dollar they were opportunistic when it suited them.

Woodsy, what I speak of happened many years before the demise of Bankstown when they were a club in the SFA. I am unsure of the rule now, but during the 80s all juniors were automatically allocated to an SFL club and needed to seek a clearance to play elsewhere. For example, a Punchbowl Pirates player U/17 had to get a clearance from St George if he wanted to play for Penno U/19 because he was a Bankstown junior which fell under the St George junior catchment.

If you follow my example, you can see that a Bankstown junior is for all intensive purposes a st George junior too. In my earlier comment I stated that Bankstown was once under the Wests catchment area but sometime during the 80s became under St George. Now I dont know. Someone older than me my be able to enlighten this further.

Woodsy Coastal Boy is correct. The juniors at Bankstown were aligned with St George. Unfortunately St George were always happy to get our players but didnt seem to direct any back to us. Sixteen years ago Bankstown had a very good junior base and large numbers participating from what I know that has really dropped of drastically since then.
