CB I tend to agree with Woodsy here although I think Syd Uni can compete at the higher level. The long term survival of SU at the top level will depend entirely on the off field management and support they receive from the AFL to ensure they have a viable plan to take them forward.

First Div will suffer in standard and probably will be in its worst state ever. For my club I can only see improvement if all things we have planned come to fruition but its going to be a hard road. We were a strong side 10 years ago but the fact is most of that group are now 33 plus and falling apart or not playing at all. I keep harping on the same point but unless the NSW AFL helps senior clubs at the grass roots levels things will get worse. We run on the smell of an oily rag in Rugby League heartland which makes it difficult to promote ourselves. The players are out there but creating an awareness of our presence is hard although credit must go to our President for gaining the support of Moorebank Sports Club and an increased profile with the local rag's(unfortunately with didnt have alot of good news for print).

I think the boys from Norwest will suprise a number of people, especially if they can form a mutally benefical alliance with Baulko.

My understanding was that Sydney Uni would be elevating their sides in Division Two to play in Div One next year. I was also under the impression that Camden might be coming across as well.

Certainly the competition needs to be bolstered and I think this would be a good start.

It will be interesting if Camden do come accross given the number of former SWS boys their. Could be some fireworks.

If Camden were to keep there team from this year they would be competitive. They have got a few boys that played with SWS when they were a competitive side, also a couple that have played senior footy for Wollongong and Campbelltown in the past year or two. Combine that with a few good young kids i think they would hold there own if they were to come back to sydney. But the only problem may be holding on to these players as some are keen to go to other teams in Sydney and some will retire no doubt.

Did anyone get down and watch the South Coast GF?

I would agree with this. I saw them playing an intra club out at Bensons Lane during the season and was very impressed by the standard.

I would suggest that a first grade side would have been very competitive in Div One this year, and if they can improve their numbers a little, I would expect them to push for a finals spot all things being equal.

still can not get my beak around the fact that sydney uni did not win the flag..... and have no 18s.... that have been brought up to the big boys league..... maybe it was balmain who pushed for them to come up so that they are not the whipping boys of the sydney afl anymore..... well done brett...

I went down and watched the GF at Albatross. Camden were not far off in one and two's and had a couple of younger blokes that would certainly handle 1st division or premier division.

It was a great crowd and atmosphere and was much larger than the Premier Division GF at Henson.

The Sydney Uni Reds lost just about every game in 2nd division while the Blues made the finals.

The Uni Blues would do alright against the weaker teams in First division, but don't have the leg speed or skill to have a huge impact on the comp.

The Reds would get smacked not just by cricket scores every week but combined innings scores in a test match.

Kanga, will you or have you spoken to any of them players from the Camden team? Having watched the game and seeing them play a few times this year, the young CHF for Camden (No 12) has been pretty impressive. He is tall and very athletic and from what i have heard he is only 18 and in his first year of footy.

Is there any other players that you would be interested in?

I will hopefully speak to a couple of the young blokes from Camden in the next few weeks and extend an invitation to them to play with us next season.

I am not sure if they will be interested or not but the least we can do is ask and give them the opportunity to play at the next level.

No doubt someone will confuse providing an opportunity with "poaching".

This notion of poaching is an interesting one.

Personally I have no trouble if a player wants out of his club and a perspective club makes an offer.

However it can get hairy and thats when people dont like it. For example, if one club is financially poor people hate it when the cashed up club comes and takes their best players. People dont like it when a successful club approaches players from bottom-of-the-table club to bolster their ranks. People also dont like when a young player is approached with promises(usually empty ones) of opportunity and lured to a high profile club. Worse again when a rich successful club approaches a young promising player from bottom of the table poor club with promises of money and opportunity!!

The bottom line is the onus should be on the current club to talk to and sign their preferred players ASAP. Footballers should be old enough to make up their own decisions really. The league does have rules in situ to prevent mass signings away from one club to another. So I guess that the gloves are off and go for it kangaman!!

PS: I really dont recall mass player movements to any club which could constitute poaching or actions significant enough to be "bad for the game" anyway. Maybe the league could refuse to register any new signings until 1 Jan each year. Therfore each club knows if their current crop aint signed on 31 Dec the individuals in question have made their intentions known.

thats last idea is probably the best thingi have read from you.... would make lot of sense then clubs cn see who is happy where they are and who wants out....... but with player movements have a look at afl... just last week how many changed clubs.....spider...tarrant..medhurst.. it is the way football is..... need a ruckman then you go get a ruck man need a forward you go get one... supply and demand..

What i'm trying to figure out is why this was never brought up in 04 when my ressies were getting pumped by 40+ goals every week??Is it the poor uni's that want to protect their images?? When i asked 1 of our "powerbrokers" if UNSW were to move up to Div 1 with us,the answer i got was "they're in a different demographic to Jets,they will struggle'' i nearly fell off my chair. Being a uni-in the eastern suburbs,with its beaches pubs lifestyle etc-they have no excuses for not having numbers....Whether they're competitive or not shouldnt matter a pittance,it didnt for the Jets when we were getting smacked.As for Sydney Uni Reds n Blues,they should-along with UNSWs teams-be pushed up to Div 1 with my mob,and make whatever fist of it they can..Otherwise,its rules for some......and for the record,we'll hold our own next year,when i "poach" KangaCoach that is
