Fortunately for SWS, common-sense prevailed (for once) and an exemption from the no stand-alone clubs in Second Division rule was applied.
Like with NorWest Jets, dropping back temporarily gives them a chance to regroup and stay alive; and hopefully return to First Division before too long. It's worked for the Jets, and I think it would be a tragedy if another First Division team in the future that fell on hard times was denied that opportunity.

I have been a pretty harsh critic over time of the administration up here and probably will continue to as I honestly believe that should be doing alot more to ensure the growth of senior football in Sydney.

However for once common sence prevailed as a number of circumstances have forced us to make this decision. Since the beginning of the Iraq/Afganistan confrontrations we have been hit hard by a drop in playing numbers and the ability to rely on players week in week out. We have in the past tried to not rely on the army for players but the fact is our area is heavily populated by armed forces members that it is unavoidable. Hence our dismay this year when after recruiting a coach and a number of players we again had the rug pulled out from under us do to this bloody conflict.

In addition to this we have lost a number of players to a neighbouring club. Now I know this will happen from time to time but to have a former(not welcome back) player(I stress player not former coach) of the club telling all and sundry at the presentation night that he is working for them and getting into everyone he can about bailing ship when we need them most and joining this other club doesnt help.

I hindsight we should have done this last year and it was discussed in detail however we decided not to for a variety of reasons.

We have put a plan together to only stay in 2nd div for only two years and hopefully only one while we rebuild and get some confidence back into the playing group. The AFL can see what we aim to achieve and how we will do it. Hopefully should the need arise with other clubs the same consideration will be shown.

        Closer to home.

Now Im sure the coach will deny this occured and I tend to agree this may be the case as the player in question has an over inflated opinion of himself and will in all honesty struggle to play ressies there. But the fact remains is his conduct on presentation night and who he told everyone he represented (he named the coach and club) cannot be denied. The other fact is the number of players who are now training there and have personnally told me that they are now playing there for the 2007 season.

To be honest it is disappointing to lose a few of these blokes but at the end of the day I want players of any ability who are commited to rebuilding the club not those who bail when things get tough. I have enjoyed both sides of the spectrum from back in 96-98 when we were very strong and in all honesty should have one at least one premership in both grades to the last few years of really struggling. To me being part of a club means you take the good and the bad regardless.

We have alot of work to do in the next few months to get things back on track but will use the Jets as a model on how to do so. I expect to have a number of converstation (and beers) with Pekay on this topic and to sound ideas off.

          That's interesting.

So a club that "cannot run a chook raffle" also has the influence at League level to directly bring about the demise of another club? You've got to be joking.

As for our coaching situation, unfortunately in life work commitments and providing for family come before footy. Situations change, and thankfully Rob had the good sense to recognise that he could no longer give the coaching job the commitment it required and stepped back while there was still ample time for the club to make the necessary changes. The work he did in his few months at the helm was excellent, and he'd be welcome back any time.

I have every sympathy with the situation with South West and how it must be affecting Tara and all the boys over there. They are a great club and I'm sure will be back bigger and better in the next couple of years ala the Jets. Hopefully the League can now see the urgency in providing greater hands on resources to help on the ground at club level.

DLH I agree with your sentiments re the AFL.

At present the 4 members on our board all have very little time and it makes life quite difficult.

            2 own their own businesses.
1 is in training for a new job and has been away quite a bit.
Myself despite being a bit of a @@@@ head have a fairly senior position where I work and and usually here 60+ hours per week.

In addition we all have family commitments to contend with as well.

Unfortunately we lost a very valuable resourse known as Wheels27 on these boards as he has relocated to Melbourne recently.

Im sure our situation is just like it is at most clubs and surely the AFL can see this. They cant continue to rely on a handfull of dedicated people at each club to ensure not only the growth of senior football is Sydney but its survival as well.

The various histories and circumstances in regards to SWS and St.Clair are completely different, thus the difference in attitude.

Actually, it's due to the countless hours of hard work that I and a handful of others put in that the game even exists in a senior form in my part of the world, but anyway.

You tell me you have nothing personal against Wests but here is an unprovoked attack on a club and and a coach. I will not dignify this with the response it truly deserves but to say comments of this nature only serve to reduce any credibility you have with other topics on this site. I think your attitude is becoming boring and I probably should do the smart thing and not respond at all but I do not like to see another person or club have their character continually assassinated in this fashion.

It seems to me Woodsy that you have a lot of hate and anger for people and clubs you know nothing about, just a lot of crying and name calling, for your information Kevin Eynaugh left North Shore under good terms, he simply wanted to coach !st grade, at that time, the position was unavailable at the club he had coached and played at. Is there going to be anything constuctive to come out of your mouth or are you just too old to play and cant take it all out on the feild? Lacking much creditability at the moment Woodsy......

There are going to be 9 clubs who do not win the premiership this year. Predicting a club will have a unmemorable season is not brave by any means.
