            Jeez, John Pitura was a top footballer;

John Pitura is probably best remembered for a protracted clearance wrangle which, in 1975, saw him crossing from South Melbourne to Richmond in exchange for Brian Roberts, Graham Teasdale and Francis Jackson. However, he deserves to be remembered at least as much for his skills as a footballer which, particularly prior to the transfer, were - perhaps surprisingly in view of his background - considerable.
That background saw the Wagga-born Pitura devote most of his formative years to rugby league. "My superstar heroes were all rugby league players from Sydney when I was a kid," he recalled years later. "I used to be always able to kick the ball a mile and a couple of my mates turned around and said to me, you're mad. They said, you're playing the wrong game, why don't you come and play Australian Rules, which I regarded as a sissy's game.

"I started to play Australian football and my mates gradually got me to play another game, then another game and soon I found that I liked it. My parents didn't like rugby league very much.

"My father was Polish and he was a mad soccer fan. They preferred me to play Australian Rules." (See footnote 1)

Spotted by South Melbourne coach Norm Smith while playing for Wagga in an inter-league match, Pitura was enticed to the Lake Oval as a 16 year old and, after overcoming home sickness and various other problems, quickly began to make his mark. One of those rare individuals who possess the natural skills necessary to succeed at virtually any ball game, Pitura was a polished left footer who became equally at home in the centre or across half forward. He earned a Big V jumper in 1973 and played precisely 100 games for South over 6 seasons. His relations with the club hierarchy were never entirely comfortable, however, and after the 1973 season he threatened to quit, saying he was tired of the committee reneging on its promises. After prolonged and often highly tense negotiations (he was even offered to Glenelg in a swap for Graham Cornes at one stage) Pitura returned to the team in July 1974, apparently on the condition that he be traded to Richmond at the end of the season. However, once again the South committee proved reluctant to fulfill its promise, and Pitura threatened to challenge the clearance rules in court. In the end, the clearance went through, albeit with much ill feeling on all sides, with perhaps the most damaged party being Pitura himself, who never again displayed his best form.

After two and a half seasons and 40 games with the Tigers John Pitura returned to his home state of New South Wales as captain coach of NSWAFL club North Shore who he immediately steered to a first premiership for 26 years. He later played for Kedron (finishing 2nd in the voting for the 1981 Grogan Medal) and Coorparoo in the QAFL.

No need for heart when you can run that quick.

I wouldnt be surprised if Dockers gained a few positions on the ladder this season.

                  Moellar is the ruckman

You have to love Kanga coach. His a gem. Sitting back not giving any information they have pick up 5 guns & 1 old player.
(wonder of they will get paid?)

He personally raided Wests & St.G and tried with 3 other clubs.

great vision from the wonder coach. Wonder if he will do to the blue boys what he did to St.G & ECE. Doesn't get his way (more to the point players to make him look good) he will just pull up stumps and take all with him!

Spot on ash all clubs should sit a young quick on him and he will not get a kick. In football terms he is not a inside player or a outside player. He is a JIB.

All clubs should be hopefull that the new 25 palyers at Balmain which include 4 from St.G in there squad follow his great leadership. This will end up just like Kanag coach Hally won't get his way or more to thew point will be found out internally he will pack up stumps and go to UNI or Easts next year.

                    He aplied for both jobs!!!!!!

Dominating what? he got dropped from the team becayse of poor performance in the AFL/NT. The quicker you reliase that the both of you are passed it and give some kids a go the better.

And tell that kid that keeps playing with his shorts to stop. he was bloody terrible against the ACT.

He also finished equal 5th with Flemo in the phelan so I guess that would put him amongst the best players in the comp last year?

And for the record he doesn't mind talking it up a bit.......and I have heard some late mail about him dominating this season.....may of been from Parks but I am inclined to believe it!!!

How can you have a coach who prefers to sit in the front row of the stands instead of getting a hardball?

Cmon Ash -arent you supposed to be an astute football watcher?

Wooden Spooners or second last at best. Ben Kinnard is the only good recruit they have got - apart from that its chicken feed

Another great example of the misinformed having the right to voice their opinion. I must thank you for the kind words.

Since you're teeing off why don't back it up and tell us all who all these players I have raided or tried to raid are?

As far as needing a great list and lots of recruits, have a look at who we lost and gained last season, you will see it was fairly similar. You may also do some homework and find out how many paid players and recruits I had in my time at St George. While your at it you may be able to find a record of the St George senior team lists for 2003/04 and count the number of U18 and on a few occasions U16 players in those sides. Let me know if you get stuck I would be more than happy to send some info over.

If you are going to have something to say you may as well be accurate.

Players at both St George & Eastcoast will tell you that I love stats.

Maybe you should spend a bit more time reading back over your text. Not only will people be able to understand it but you might also notice that most of it is a load of garbage!

Keep posting rooboy I am sure I am not the only one amused.
