The same goes for the SFL.

You want the the top half of the comp make to the finals. Realistically, only the top 3 are going to be competitive.

Did Campbelltown deserve to make the finals last year finishing 5th in a 9 team comp? Would they have had a realistic chance at beating East Coast or Penno?

With no disrepect to Campbelltown - No they didn't have a realistic chance.

Why raise the hopes of a couple of teams when they're not going to make it? Extend the season by a couple of rounds if you want more games.

If the top 5 are all capable of beating each other on the day then, great bring on the top 5 but given the current state of the comp it's not worth it.

It's too lop sided at the moment.
No disrespect taken everyone is entitle to their own opinion but I will point out a few things that may suggest that 5th spot would certainly of had a realistic chance.

Our results in the second half of the season against the four finalist were a 14 pt loss to the Minor Premiers, 11 point loss to the Premiers, 14 pt win over West who finished 2nd on the ladder and a draw with the Crows. As you can see we only lost 2 games in the 2nd half of the season and had form on the board coming into finals against the top sides.

    Looks very realistic to me!

          My 2 cents.

It is fair to say teams featuring in the bottom section of a finals draw rarely win. However what it ensures is that the teams still around in the third week of the finals are in form. There is nothing worse than team 3 playing team 4 who are hopelessly out of form and cruising on to the next round without a challenge. At least 4 would have to beat 5 first which ensures better games further on. Wimbledon plays over 120 players and those who progress to final 8 are all in form. The Masters tournament in Germany is limited to the top 10 or so and the results IMO is a dud. Putting together 2 good games at the end of the season should not be necessarily rewarded with a GF birth. Penno had it too easy in the finals last year playing their first two games against opposition who were below their best.

My two cents, over the last few years the team that has finished 4th has gone on to either make or win the GF.

            2006 Penno
            2005 Norths
            2004 St George(made the gf)
            2003 UNSW/ES

I dont see the need for a change to 5 teams.

I agree 100% with Humphrey Bear about the AFL and why it has a top 8, it is purely a revenue raiser for the AFL.

I do agree with you that Penno were very lucky as Crows had 3-4 key players missing in the elimination final and Wests were definitely at the end of their season a few weeks before. The GF result would have been reversed on a dry day

Nonetheless ,no one will remember that and you can only play the cards your dealt.

              Well done again to Penno.

                Go eagles,

For someone who comes from the 80"s you seem to have vision. Unlike most on this web site.

I could not name one competition in Victoria that has ten teams and only has a top 4. The top 4 provides no benefit for the top team and a top 5 rewards the top 3 teams and makes for a basic finals series.

SO you reckon that the AFL think their final 8 is stupid- That was the silliest call i have read on this website. Unless your name is Andrew i cant even comprehend that

Its not about revenue its about providing teams, players and supporters the opportunity to participate in why we play the game.

Get out of the 80's and dont be afraid to change for the better of the competition

I heard a few years ago the competition was reduced from 22 games to 16 games after consultation with clubs "to reduce costs". Each game played costs money to pay staff, players, ground fees etc rather than make money. I guess the length of the finals is chosen with finances considered more than just what is best for the players.

                    Kanga coach,

Did you think l was serious?.No, l was only stirring the pot with some facts.
Who cares about C/Blues? Half your luck, on how you get players too your club, actually its really smart & great networking by you. You have many followers! Having the majority of your squad online pumping your tyres up sits well for the rest of the the clubs in the comp. Good luck for the rest of the season??
P.S. The Mummy means "you have more bandages on your body parts than an actual mummy" What ever you do, don't lie down as the club may enshrine you.

Hang on, this is coming from a guy with no vision and no idea on ways to improve this great game of ours. Your feedback is always negative and quite frankly im sure I wouldn't be the only one who wishes you were banned from the forum entirely. Obviously a week in the bin hasn't triggered any of your brain cells which leads one to believe that you don't have many left. Did you cop too many knocks to the head in your illustrious career? Sounds that way to me.

So unless your going to start making a positive contribution on this site then i'd suggest you crawl back into your pouch and don't come back

Not everything needs to be positive.

Some of what Rooboy said may be true.

Look how more interesting this forum was with his snide comments.

There is a place here for positive and negative contributions.

We need guys like you Blanket and guys like Rooboy and definitely Ash who can do all.
