I know I have opened myself up here but, what do we all think of the standard. I personally think that there are 15 or so that are reasonable but after that it does drop off a lot meaning that the lower grades suffer.

in honesty the standard for first grade is fair to middling, but i agree ur point about the lower grade umpires.......the last game of the year i played with the ressies against wests at wagner comin back from broken ribs just for a run...id have to say the umpires on that day...were no joke the worst id ever had.....throughout all my years of footy. DISGRACEFUL
In terms of improvement with higher grade umpires just need more consistency with everythin.........a good umpired game is one which u forget there even there.Come On Boys Make A Noise... -
Yeah ive just looked at who the umpires were, there not the greatest, but SFA finals were on that week and your game from memory was 2nd last vs last i think. But with the consistency thing there is a crop of 8-10 younger guys coming through that show a bit, but consistency is hard to teach especially with the way rules are supposed to be interpreted.Comment

Having umpired on Sunday in the International Rules day I can vouch that it is very hard to umpire a match solo as you are not in the best position to adjucate at all times & the pace of the game can be pretty quick (especially when you are scorekeeper & timekeeper). Something that may look obvious on the sideline can easily be missed. I suppose it is also a matter of picking up stuff that isn't seen from the sideline because of the different angles. It was also hard to make sure that you didn't get in the way of players.
** RECOMMENDATION ** every player in the comp should have to umpire at least one quarter of football during the year and only then will they get an appreciation of the hard task it truly is & what pressure that the umpie is under if a wrong decision is made.
In Sydney I believe that more umpie numbers are needed for each match - but I think we have to be realistic & admit that we won't see 3 umpires in every grade in every division every weekend for a whole year for quite some time.
I found it pretty myopic as well that players have the idiotic sense to cause blame on an umpie's error - in fact I blew up a few times & sledged a few players back and told them to have a good hard look at their own game as the reason why they were losing.
Still in my 320 odd games of senior footy I can't remember losing one game because of an umpiring decision - lost a lot because of poor skill error & poor decision making by players & poor tactics by coaches and the occasional loss due to individual brilliance by an opponent.See me run a marathon again as a leprechaun?

Im not being that harsh i'am one of them, but it is just the truth.
Would love to make players do that or make them come down to training and train us with and do some coaching and see how many know the rules.Last edited by orange_maggot; 7 March 2007, 03:45 PM.Comment

You must be an absolute idiot GoEagles! You have people on this thread commenting on the standards of umpires in SAFL and you get on here and swipe a young bloke. The standard of SAFL umpires is ordinary at times take it from someone who has played in Sydney for the past 8 years. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the fact they give up their own time to do something they most probabley enjoy, however they make stupid mistakes which frustrates players. Players need to learn to get the umpires onside by not gobbing off giving them a spray and get on with playing footy. Players will impact a game more than an umpire and let's not forget players make mistakes too. If a player thinks they can do a better job than an umpire, stop playing footy and become one.Looking dangerous in the forward 50Comment

Will be very interesting to see how the umps go about policing the new head over the footy rule. In my opinion its only going to get more frustrating for players. What does everyone think?Comment
