    Balmain Coach

Does Damian Hall really need to be named in Balmains best every week? He is (i presume) a well paid Player/Coach who was recruited in the offseason. Yet every round in 07 he is named in Balmains best.

So i have just a couple of Questions: 1. If he is submitting the names after every game, and is including himself each week, does that not make him seem like a complete tool? 2. If the club are submitting names, do they really need to pump up his already inflated tyres?

I bet Garns doesn't name himself when he has an OK game. Give the recognition to the kids. Unless you kick 6 from Half Back and have 40 touches Garns.

on the matter of coaches and being named in the best, Archer for Sydney Uni has easily been there best player every game so far, and was a stand-out against UNSWES, but I notice he hasn't once figured in the best. Surely this is how it is meant to be done. Hats off to Archer and I hope he's team continue to improve, like they obviously have over the weekend.

Don't worry, I am not about to change my name to I_Heart_Archer. Kefalas is still the one.

Arch is a good bloke. And very good for Syudney Uni. There's no surprise he doesn't name himself.

A wise man once said if you dont blow ur own trumpet,no-one hears ur tune! He may play out of his skin-iv never seen him play for the record-but to pencil ur own name in wk in or out is a bit much. Sharks coach Jason Philp carved us up kicking 6 when resting off ball, and didnt think he rated himself a mention.as Rooster said,if a bloke gets a job done for the coach, maybe no touches as a tagger, thats wat best is for.even if Hally isn't the one naming it, surely he knows its happening.time will tell.

Where I come from, the best players are named by the timekeepers, not the coaching staff.
That way, the six players that deserve to get in the best, get there. Whether they are the coach or not.
Who is saying that just because every coach chooses the best players, that Hall does as well?
I've seen one Balmain game and Hall played pretty well until knocked out. And there wasn't more than two or three blokes that readily spring to mind that did better.
Take the selections out of the coaches hands and you will get a fair representation of the best six.

Anyone who believes the best players on the field are the ones that are named in the paper has very little knowledge of football.

They arent worth two bob and I thought every body understood that.

Spot on Bear. I got named in our best on the weekend and had 3 kicks for the game. My mate did the stats for me and laughed. Why are people so unkind?

As the Rooster and others have said, what happens to the bloke who does a job for his coach and doesn't get a mention because others have not realised? It wouldn't matter to many of us who gets a mention, however I think a young bloke coming up through the ranks who does a good job and gets his name in the paper would be thrilled. I played against Hally at the weekend also and was as amused as Rooster.

                      Just for you Monty.

Reading from posts in this thread, I would assume it would be difficult to name anything once knocked out, hence....

I too witnessed the game on the weekend. Simon Webb was clearly the difference between the 2 sides on the day and was not even named in the top 6.

This would validate Humphreys quote being accurate as the most "amusing" player named as best for Campbelltown who would not have been in top 10 that game- wouldnt you agree kc?

Well, duh!! You are one of the coaches are you not??

Who puts your 'bests' in? And are you going to get the Coach's Award at the end of the year?

Well I hate to disagree Ash but our best on the weekend were actually as named. I know that Webby would have a laugh at the suggestion he was our best on the weekend. Although you are right, the players named may not always be the best 6. It is sometimes hard to find 6 best players and yet other games you could name 10! For the record I try to make sure the players who play well are acknowledged.

The punter on the side line does not know what job different players have or even who their direct opponents are most of the time and therefore are looking at just one phase of the game. Like you Ash different people have different opinions on what constitutes a good player and/or a good performance. I guess each teams coaching staff are in the best position to judge their teams best players although I must admit I have been amused myself on occasions. (Probably through ignorance of opposition strategy of course!)

Question for you Ash: A player gets 30 effective disposals, 14 marks and kicks 3 goals. What sort of numbers and performance would you need to knock him off for BOG & How would he possibly not be in your best 10?

I look forward to your reply and it will be interesting to see if there is any logic behind your analysis. (I will tell you Webby's stats after your reply)

Do you take account of centre/stop play clearances?
There are also other factors that go beyond the stats and am happy to discuss but not on this forum

No need to reply as I like what your doing.

Good luck to you on the weekend and there is a spare jumper if you require one on Saturday.

Do every stat possible for us and opposition. I have a saying that I use often on Monday's "Stats don't lie".Thanks for the offer mate but I struggle to get through one game!
