    The New game

I have watched the so called development of the game through the recent rule changes & continually review & question if they are for the betterment of the game.

The hands on the back rule when competing for a mark has eliminated one of the true highlights of our game which is the 'specky'. The high flying mark whereby a player launches themself on an opponents back to bring about a spectacular aerobatic mark that raises any crowd to there feet. I believe that this rule has made it extremely difficult for any player to carry out this feit - predominantly forwards - which is a genuine shame.

The holding the ball rule which is now focused on by our umpires has turned our game into a spectacle that resembles a game of Rugby on steriods. Players go into a pack to win the ball & then push it away as though it was a life changing disease. This again I believe challenges everything you are taught as a kid which is to 'go in & get the pill'.

Lastly the physical contest, where has it gone? A player can put on a perfect hip & shoulder but should contact be made with a players head you get weeks? Should you pull out of the contest so you dont get weeks & enable an opposition player to run through unscathed? Maybe Netball on steriods?

I could go on & sound like an old disgruntled footballer but the changes in the games style recently have been dramatic & questionable as to the benefits of the game?

Sadly a lot of Burley's comments I agree with. Particularly the in-the-back rule which has turned the AFL this season into a farce. We're not quite as bad in our comp, but it's still having an effect. The demise of the speckie this season can, without doubt, be put down to this rule.
