Once again the brand name is under a cloud.Chris Mainwarring a brilliant player and person has left us with the usual suspicion which surrounds this club.I also note with interest who he had been with earlier. What has to happen before this carnage stops. It even taints the East Coast name.

Unfortunately the carnage of drug-related death can only be minimised as those who want to use it,will find it and do so at their own peril.People just have to be smarter.
As for the East Coast name, yes there is an association with the West Coast Eagles and they are part of the whole entity, and to be associated with such a club that has had its run-ins with drugs in the recent past can have a damaging effect, but in this case i believe the East Coast name has not been tarnished at all.Mainwaring is a past player, unlike when Cousins hit the headlines, and East Coast have never followed down that path of drugs. If somebody says to you, "Can I ask you a question?"....isn't it a little too late? -
The death of Mainwaring was tragic, especially if the manner of his death was as speculated. It's a further disaster for West Coast's image, already battered after previous episodes.
But I can't see it having any effect on the East Coast Eagles. Someone involved with the ECE may confirm or refute this, but I think it's highly unlikely that any potential new players or sponsors would stay away from the ECE because of Mainwaring.
There's a thread about Mainwaring on the General AFL Chat board, so any comments about him would belong there. But its influence on local footy in Sydney would in all probability be non-existent.

A West Coast Eagles story that may be of more interest & relevance to this board is this year's Podbury Medallist, Ryan Davis, being drafted onto West Coast's rookie list for 2008. Behind Craig Bird, who is going to Sydney, he is the second Scholarship player to be picked to go to his AFL club.
Congratulations to Ryan, and hopefully there'll be more AFL Scholarship players getting a chance to go on to AFL level. The scheme will be voluntary next year, so clubs don't have to pick a Scholarship player if they don't want to - but there's some talented players coming through that AFL clubs would do well to have a look at.

Was the umpires this year. Nothing against Ryan Davis and I hope he goes well at West Coast, but Ron Wason was best on ground."It's up to the rest of the players in the room to make a new batch of premiership players next year," Adam Goodes, triple Bob Skilton Medallist, October 7, 2011.

Spolier, spot on. All football is affected by Cousins lack of self control and self respect.
Especially footy in Sydney where the AFL is still trying to gain ground and increase the number of supporters for the Swans and the game in general, this just sets everything back a few steps.
No wonder Juddy left!Comment

I have been as critical of ECE as anyone but I cant see how this will have any effect on them or the game in Sydney.
In the same way Andrew Johns had no effect on lower levels of League, Wendell Sailor had no effect on lower lower levels of Rugby I cant see how Cousins impacts on footy in Sydney and the ECE in particular.
It is a social isuue not a sporting issue and I dont imagine Oscar will have sponsors ringing to say they no longer wish to support the ECE.Comment

SFL affected, what about the WAFL?!
ECE have an association, but they aren't the WCE, and do not represent the problems that WCE are currently facing. I agree with Humphrey on this one, that it is a social problem however i do think that it directly affects the code, not the clubs associated with it. if this were the case, then shouldnt the WAFL and its players, more so young aspiring players, be affected by this as well?If somebody says to you, "Can I ask you a question?"....isn't it a little too late?Comment

You're half right Pocket but in the reverse!! Would you like a relative of yours playing or associated with WCE? WA football is now tainted because one of the clubs who has the endorsement of the WAFL, in fact the licence is continually in trouble. The GIO look like giving away the sponsorship so that will affect all stakeholders including ECE. This whole affair has probably SPOILED their day and the true ramifications are around the corner!SpoilerComment
