Is Sydney's Premier Football improving to the extent where it can be compared in the same relevance as the supposed comparitive State Leagues?

It's hard to tell. Sydney is still the weakest of the state leagues, but it's hard to accurately guage whether the gap is closing. Also there's not many judges who see enough of more than one state league in the same season.
Burley mentioned comparisons with AFL Canberra. The Swans have long believed AFL Canberra is a stronger league, fielding their reserves in that league.
Is the gap closing? It's hard to tell. Last year's rep game was a positive sign - in rep games in the past, Sydney has usually been pumped by Canberra; but last year at Manuka there were only a couple of kicks in it. On the other hand, both leagues had players out of that game.
And the Canberra competition has problems of its own. With Wagga Tigers and Weston Creek Lions having withdrawn over the last couple of years, there's only 6 teams left including the Swans. And it must have a devastating effect on the local clubs to have no hope of ever winning another premiership. Maybe they got it right when the Redbacks didn't compete in the Sydney AFL finals and should look at doing the same in Canberra.

Occupational hazards:
I don't eat animals since discovering this ability. I used to. But one day the lamb I was eating came through to me and ever since then I haven't been able to eat meat.Comment

The Sydney comp will be better this year. The Swans should distribute their players evenly through it with the lower teams getting first pick.Lets not forget what it was like for clubs when they were in last time.Everything had to be perfect. Let them battle hard and help Sydney football move forward.Do Port Power players not selected play in Queensland?SpoilerComment

I thought that SFL would be the best comp in Australia judging the amount of "champions" from other state leagues that come over here & say how good they are & that they did this & that but then end up struggling to make the magoos by round 2.See me run a marathon again as a leprechaun?

Half the swans list battle to get a kick in any league including sydney
Lets face it Sydney AFL is last and Canberra 2nd last. The Swans wanted to go to the SANFL but both parties couldn't agree. They have FIVE real teams.

the swans reserves should be allocated to the SFL. thats an influx of around 18 or so near AFL quality players. And when the new sydney team enters then you have 36 odd of these players.
This should help the comp in its standard, give the Swans a kick up the a!@#$ and recognise the SFL (as it has done with auskick and junior footy) and hopefully get sydney ppl not just following the Swans but following Aussie Rules.Comment

Demitrispew and Co are only interested in TV deals and lining their own pockets. Why has the NSW AFL been made to accept coverage on pay TV channel only after protacted negotiations? Why doesnt some on the TV rights "Contra Deal " provide for advertising our local code and more importantly highliting the fact we desperately require umpires who are well renumerated for their time and efforts?Comment

It goes something like this.....
SANFL>>VFL>>>>>>>WAFL>>>>>>>QFL>>>NTFL>>>Under 12's>>Sydney and Canberra C grade amateurs
A WAFL club recruited one of the better players from the ACT comp and he is a modest reserves player for South Fremantle. So still a long way to go.Comment

Theres no point getting more umpires etc until you raise the standard of player in the comp. Hence using the swans reserves players in the SFL. Yes, maybe keep the top 6 and have them play in a comp like the VFL etc but the rest of the reserves could easily help the SFL.
At the moment they play in the canberra league, smash teams week in week out. Cant see any point in that.
On the point of getting umpires, I contemplated it, mainly for the fitness aspect of it, but with training starting as i am finishing work theres no chance of that happening.Comment

I think having the swans reserves split up into the SFL teams on a week to week basis would be absolutley obsurd.
Firstly from the point of view of the swans:
The Swans Players get no oppurtunity to delevop the Swans Game plan and practice specific areas set down by roosy. They are thrust into a team (in a few cases a rabble) where they dont know anyone and have to try and fit into that team/and coach's game plan. They are playing a lesser standard of football and it would be a step in the wrong direction. The purpose of getting into the AFL is to play at a higher level, majority of players have played in either TAC, VFL, SANFL, WAFL etc and to then step backwards into the SFL. Ha Laughable. It would be a detriment to the overall Swans Playing Roster.
Secondly from the SFLs team point of view:
How do you devleop a game plan around a team of 19/20 until say a Friday night when you find out which 2/3 swans players you get. You may plan to say get 2 key positions, and then come sunday gametime end up with a flank and pocket due to Swans team changes late Saturday arvo. Yes it would be great to get 2/3 AFL listed players but they would prob be different ones every week. No Consistency.
I agree Sydney AFL has gotten pretty ordinary in the past 10yrs but this is not the answer.Comment
