Looks like Moorebank Sports and UTS have each picked up an extra team.
And for the first time in many years, no clubs have dropped any teams - so we've got an increase of 2 senior teams for next season. Good stuff.

Do we know how the under-18s are going to line up next season? I would guess that UNSW-ES would go up to Premier Cup and Riverview drop back to Challenge Cup. Hopefully Balmain will be able to field an under-18s team next year - any word yet from Dockerland about that?

I think you can chalk up an extra for East Coast as well.

You're right Hard Times - I hadn't noticed that in the team lists. Thanks for that.

Terrific news. I reckon this will be the best thing that could happen to football in Sydney and I congratulate Garry Burkinshaw and everyone else at Sydney AFL House for their foresight and for having the strength to go through with it.
These are the full details released yesterday, which might answer questions such as yours, Norris.

Subject: 2009 AFL Sydney Competition Structures

          Good Afternoon,
Following the receipt of the team nominations for the 2009 AFL Sydney season, I can confirm the competition structures for the 2009 season are as follows:

Premier Division: Balmain, Campbelltown, East Coast, North Shore, Pennant Hills, St George, Sydney University, UNSW-Eastern Suburbs, Western Suburbs, Wollongong (10)

          Division One:
East Coast, Manly-Warringah, North Shore, Pennant Hills, St George, Sydney University, UNSW-Eastern Suburbs, UTS, Western Suburbs, Wollongong (10)

          Division Two:
Balmain, Camden, Campbelltown, East Coast, Holroyd-Parramatta, Macquarie University, Manly-Warringah, Southern Sharks, Sydney University, UTS (10)

          Division Three:
Holroyd-Parramatta, Macquarie University, Moorebank, Nor-West, Pennant Hills, Penrith, Southern Sharks, UNSW-Eastern Suburbs, UTS (9)

          Division Four:
Camden, Holroyd-Parramatta, Macquarie University, Manly-Warringah, Moorebank, Nor-West, Penrith, Sydney University, UNSW-Eastern Suburbs, UTS (10)

The Under 18s competitions will be finalised in the near future following our assessment of all nominations.
I am about to commence doing the fixture following the receipt of the individual club requests. It is intended that a draft fixture will be available in early December.
Once the draft fixture is released clubs will get the opportunity to request any changes to the times and venues of their home fixtures. Once this is completed the final draw will be released hopefully prior to Christmas.

BMR, I know you have been pushing this barrow for a long time now. Can you outline why it will be a good idea.

I'm pretty sure I explained my feelings in the other thread. Do I need to again?

Can anyone see any reason why sydney uni blues were promoted 2 divisions whilst the team that beat them in the 2nd Div GF (Penno) is in the division below them? It couldn't be because SUANFC has a better all-round club list than Penno (Penno seniors won gf, reserves came third, thirds won gf). Not sure of the logic for this decision.

I had the same query however it was felt that despite Penno going back to back Uni had also claimed the last two minor premierships. They also have greater playing numbers and support staff at their disposal. It was only a year ago that they had three sides running around in Div two.

I understand you're comment tara, but having 3 sides in 2nd div was not an advantage, merely a sign of numbers at the club (at that grade, a lot are beginners to the game). If having 3 teams in 2nd div was an advantage, Syd Uni Blues would have won the 2nd Div premiership in 2007

If we take the Syd Uni Blues in isolation (to consider the merit of jumping 2 divisons), yes they may have won the minor premiership this year (not sure about 2007 though), but surely what counts is the flag. I don't believe it's possible to argue that Syd Uni has a stronger list than Penno at the moment, so that is not a supporting argument to the 2 division promotion. I also don't believe that Syd Uni has stronger support than Penno, both have strong support/facilities, so that's not really an argument either.

If we believe that the arguments above are not strong, what other possible reason could there be?

Maybe they nominated for those grades?

I believe the Blues nominated for Division 3.

Im not suggesting that the playing list is stronger as such but they have more resources available to them both on and off field. Penno do not have the same playing numbers available to them and I believe that a number of the boys who played list year have now retired such as Hound Dog and this may see a slight (if any) drop in their performance in 2009.

As said I was a little surprised but what I have said is roughly what was relayed to me.
