Ideas on Making a Sydney/ACT Premier League

Heres my thoughts for a stronger comp:

Premier League Consiting of;


Eastlakes
Queenbeyan
Belconnen
Ainsle


Pennant Hills
East Coast
North Shore
UNSW/Easts
St George
Balmain


Sydney AFL restructures underneath with two or three feeder clubs to the Premier League so for example:


Pennant Hills - Pennant Hills (second side) Parramatta and Mac uni
East Coast - East Coast (second side) Penrith and NW Jets
North Shore - North Shore (Second Side), Manly and St Ignatious
UNSW/Easts - UNSW (second side) and UTS
St George - Cambeltown, Camden, Woolongong and Southern Power
Balmain - Sydney Uni, Moorebank and Wests


AFL Canberra Stays the same with Tuggernong remaining in a lower standard comp. Same teams, but maybe ADFA and others to join to make it 8 or so?


So the Each team from sydney picks there best to play prem league, rest get fed back through a new 1st div structure similar to as it is now.

Swans reserves get put back through the teams similar to the way its done in SANFL and WAFL

What are peoples ideas?

Just a couple of logistical questions cheese cake.

1/ who pays for transport/accomodation costs of the players?
2/ Considering the greatest farce in sydney football is the clubs have to pay for umpires, would the clubs have to pay for umpires to also travel and stay?

And if you really want to make it a Premier League why have you got Balmain in there?Christ if they cant get within 10 goals of Campbelltown how would they go against the Ainslies and Belconnens of this world.

1/ only be playing 4 games a year in ACT. ACT clubs 6 games in Sydney. Would only need a 52 seater bus to get down there. No accom necceassary. Money would need to come from TV deal (greater sponsership from better coverage) and the AFL kicking it in to get West Sydney off their feet. Where are their reserves going to play?



2/ Umps would be localised I guess, but could also jump on team bus I suspose for subjectivity.


Promotion and relegation system would work that out over time I guess. Balmain may have lost one game on the weekend but I believe they have a better financial structure with Drummoyne Leagues than most other clubs.

I believe this idea has been brought up in the past. Due to cost it never eventuated. Campbelltown tried in the mid to late 90's when they were dominating Sydney football. They were also financialy strong only to return after 3 or 4 years. I have named myself No Idea as I don't have any idea, but you lost me when you had Balmain in the top tier. Balmain have been lucky to win 5 games in 5 years and you want to put them up against the strong Canberra clubs. Are you Hally trying to pump up the clubs tyres?

It also can't work without the financial backing of the league and without all clubs being able to participate as no club will want to be left out. Back to the drawing board Cheese and come up with a VIABLE solution instead of wishful thinking that has been aired in the past.

Pardon me if this sounds ignorant, I don't know much about the structure of the local comp, but is the idea of Premier League not good in itself or do we just need to find a way to make it cost effective?

There's been numerous threads on State leagues before, but it's hard to see how one's ever going to get off the ground. As Boris mentioned, the travel costs would be prohibitive.
There's also an issue about whether clubs would be prepared to compromise their independence to play as feeder clubs. Some clubs already have less formal arrangements, but it's hard to see how that would play out in a formal structure like CheeseCake has mentioned.

CheeseCake, modifying your suggested league, if it was (example only) Wests that got the gig in the state league instead of Balmain, with Balmain to act as a feeder club for Wests; would your enthusiasm for the concept of the state league still be there? Would Balmain accept a role as being a feeder club for Wests?

Also I can't see the Swans reserves, or WS18's, willing to be split to play among various state league clubs - they'd want to play together.

I note your points. My responses:

*I dont see this as a statewide league. The travel distance between the furthest wouldnt be much more than 3 hrs? And as i Said, each team would only play in the ACT 4 times a year (ACT in Syd 6 times).

When you think of how far some guys from say Manly travel to play Camden for instance (with a lot less at stake) it doesnt sound so bad.

*The independance and feeder club issue wouldn't be that difficult. There'd still be a SFL with East Coast Penno etc playing, maybe slightly weakend, but this woulkd bring the comp back in line abit with other clubs and open the opportunity for a promotion relegation System in the top 2 divs of the Sydney League

Yes it is possible ... but definitely not easy to achieve. Money & travel are the main issues ... but not enough reason to throw away the idea altogether.

A state knockout could be the start of it one day ...

Cheese Cake on your Balmain/West point what do you think West Aussie Rules club is I have been to both and i seam to think that West's club has a lot more potential for making the money needed to back such an adventure

On the other hand i do agree with the Swans / West Sydney not having a induvidual team in the comp if you look at SA / WA they seam to have no problem playing with someone one week and then against them the next i think it makes there more aware of the players that they may play with.

It also means that if you have 5 inside midfielders in the "seconds" they can all play serious game time at no detriment to the others. Same for multiple ruckmen, key forwards et al. Then there is the bonus of possibly having, for example, your reserve fullback playing on your reserve full-forward, and both tightening their games for the experience.

balmain may have the backin of dramoyne leauges club however on the contray clubs such as belconnen in the canberra afl have the backing of such larger clubs that include poker machines and golf courses.

This obviously brings in a lot of profit to the club which will allow larger player budgets these player budgets are something that wont be able to be meet by sydney afl teams.There for i see that will make the competition very un-even this dosent make for good footy.
