    UTS club champions????

I notice on the sydneyafl.com website an article citing UTS as only a win away from club champions. Is this a gee up? It's hard to comment on this without offending the bats who have not subscribed to this but.... Does anyone really think coming first in a comp where most other teams enter their 2s is better than playing in premier league? The league obviously thinks so as they choose to highlight it on their website and base an award on it. Why not add the AFL teams to this criteria and we can announce: UTS are a better club in 2009 than St Kilda and Geelong? This sounds stupid but there's no difference comparing UTS to all the premier league clubs when they don't play in the same comp and the criteria is the number of wins you have and nothing else. Maybe a premier league club will consider relegating themselves to have a crack at the Club Championship next year? I laugh but mostly at the nit wits at HQs.

CB have you ever heard of the McClelland Trophy and if so do you understand the principal upon which it is awarded?

I understand that Tara but when you compare a club in Premier Div a win is only given the same number of points as a First Div win for UTS.

This is not UTS' fault as they have had a great season but shouldn't there be some sort of weighting applied so that clubs are competing on a more even footing.

I know this is the first season under the restructure and these sorts of things may take a little while to work out.

To grow the great game trophies like this are the only way to even up the clubs, why the hell should premier division clubs get a break in this a club based trophy, its for 3 teams so its about depth if the premier div clubs were performing over the grades they would be up there. Maybe the better overall clubs should be premier div not some of the basket cases in there now.

At the start of the year alot of prem clubs thought uts and manly would be middle of the road clubs and all their reserves teams would beat them easily.
i spoke to someone from syd uni at the start of the year who thought their reserves would beat uts quite easily.

And that is the reason it is there. A club scneario, not a "highest team" award. The only thing that needs consideration is that in future it may have a higher weighting for a the U18 side vs a clubs 3rd grade side - thus focusing clubs on developing juniors.

lol - the same was said by other clubs in the restructure meeting with the AFL. just sat quietly and thought would let the season pan out. So it has.

That is the point, that is not what was expected (at least from some Prem Div Clubs).

For years Prem Div (SFL) have stated that Div 1 (SFA) wernt fit to be their boot studders and that their level in both Seniors and Ressies was far superior. This year has been a wake up call for them Id say. Personally I dont think either UTS or Manly would be that far off the pace in Prem Div anyway.

No Div 1 team would beat any of the prem div sides. It is easy to look good against most of the ressies teams as the depth in Sydney footy is disgraceful. The majority of prem div clubs do not have more than about dozen guys on their lists that are actually decent footballers hence the drop off in talent once you reach their ressies team...
The results of div 1 highlights the fact that there are a lot of players playing in that div that are capable of playing prem div.
Until the best players are playing in the top league and then filtered down according to ability the SFL is going to continue to be of very poor standard in comparison with other State Leagues.

Disagree, until we have an abundance of senior players accross multiple levels and the competition is healthy right from Auskick to Masters then the standard wont be comparable.

Do you think that the the best players in Melbourne play in the VFL? Not a chance when there are suburban clubs offering massive coin.

It will be interesting to see how good UTS are when they come up against cellar dwellers North Shore reserves this week.

No Tara I have not heard of the McClelland trophy but I am happy for someone to enlighten me. If the trophy took into account a bunch of off-field admin considerations (such as the BDAFL do) like paying your annual fees(does anymore but a couple of clubs ever pay - post a message here if you know your club pays), completing all the paperwork on time etc etc the concept in my view would be better. But looking at the table posted by the sydney afl the trophy is based purely on wins and losses and based on these facts I stand by my original comment.

This particular part is covered in the by-laws, where if a club hasn't paid their affiliation fees by a certain round, they are ineligible to play finals. Ok for those teams who don't play come september, but when you consider that only 3 clubs (Camden, Balmain, St Igs) will have no representation in this years finals, in any comp, i'm certain that all fees would be paid up by now. Would be some unhappy campers if not.
