    Money Changes everything

Seems at the end of the day, whether 1 year or 3 money changes everything. Yes Some clubs have money threw hard work and fundraising and some have it threw the fortunate wealth of those involved. (lets Salary Cap SFL) could we???? But what is disappointing, is that the once upon a time a junior started at a club for a reason and stayed...Cause he 1. Supported the club. 2. His life long mates would be at the club.3. He wanted that club and his mates to be successful.. I didnt see any of this in the Premier Div Grand Final...Neither team...Both tried to Buy one....Of course 1 did. I would however like to know just how many (breed) local juniors played for there respective clubs in that GF. I can see the happiness of each player in there premiership team photos ......BUT WAKE UP AND smell the @@@@ing roses these blokes played beside you cause NOT that they wanted to they got paid too..... AND more than likely hated you. And NOW they have a flag expect them to @@@@ of. The coach has been a Gold digger and dragged alot with him. And yes for those about to say... "Congrats to them" but it will be a one of.Cause money dosnt last for ever...Ask luffy at Balmain...UNWES...Theres will be gone by end of 2010..Ahhh of course Nth Shore at the moment.....Build your clubs around enternity not immediate success...Cause it dosnt last in the long run. "Yeah" Good while it does...Cause thats the time you'll be there but when it gets tuff you'll be gone??????? Just how many clubs has this happened to??? Its @@@@@@ and is ruining Sydney Football....Trust me........

Its the nature of the beast, its business these days. Sponsors want a return for their outlay, so they get the best they can. Any club in Sydney would be mad not to recruit, given our state's status as the worst state in Australia for footy development. And for a club out this way, like East Coast, its not often a player from interstate will move out this way, not with the beaches and city life further towards town, so why shouldn't they pursue a stronger list??
From their GF winning side though, the following are products of the North-West of Sydney, some are even local Baulko players-

      Ben Physick- Baulko
      Dan Spiteri- Hawkesbury
      Michael Johnston- Westbrook i think
      Rowan Bilkey (c)- Baulko
      Brad Ure- Baulko
Ryan Fitton- pretty sure he's a local, not an import, played local soccer before footy i think
      Ben Rogers- Baulko

Thats a third of their team from local junior clubs, pretty good effort. Penno last year would be even more i reckon.
We had in our Senior Finals team, out of 30, 19 local juniors, and similar in reserves, and coming up against the likes of Sydney Uni, UTS and UNSW/ES, i doubt they would've had 19 between them from Sydney. It certainly didn't help us win any games though.

Good to see Daniel Spiteri is classed as a Hawkesbury junior after a season with them. Previously played 100 games for Emu Plains

This is a 'State League' competition.

Hence in the true definition of the word, you should have the best players from around the state (ie more often than not, non-locals) playing within the teams.

Players changing from club to club within the competition is a concern, but overall a large contingent of non-local juniors would be what you expect across each and every club. Not just the evil Uni's or the evil ECE, if this competition is to live up to it's own expectations.

Unless you are that arrogant to expect that Sydney Junior footy is that much more superior than any where else in the state.

Woah boy is the "money" thing getting old. I deffinately agree there with I heart Kefalas.

People complain about clubs having money, but then they complian how the standard is not good enough when compared to other state leagues.

There is a saying in Italian, "you can't have a full keg and a drunk wife".

And for the record Pekay, no one cares about the lower divisions and juniors. Not being mean, but there is no argument can be made against the Uni's in the lower leagues especially. If they have 4-5 teams do you expect them to all have homegrown local talent? Come on guys get serious. Of all places, you excepect a bit of immigration is Sydney!!!

                Common Mistake

Having played my fair share of footy I think I am in a good position to provide comment on the old "MONEY" topic. Albeit slightly biased I feel it is still a valid opinion.

From my inside knowledge the following is correct on the premisership list from Saturday.

Local Players: (my definition of locals are blokes who played at U18 level)
                Ben Physick
                Rowan Bilkey
                Jack Dimmery
                Daniel Spiteri
                Brad Ure
                Ryan Fitton
                Ben Rogers
                Michael Johnston

Players who moved from interstate and were mates of players playing at ECE at the time:
Jon Vlatko - played footy with Ben Physick in SA
Ryan Smyth - played with Vlatko
Kristian Pearson - played with Smyth
Aaron Byerlee - played against Ben Physick and mates outside footy
Michael Sankey - I went to School with Jason Coulloupas

Coach & Players who followed the coach:
                Glenn Garner
                Ben Bourke
                Mark Maher
                Mark Skuse
Ed Wilson (played with Garner at St.George)

Coming from Victoria following the coach is very common. Players generally follow the coach because they believe they get the best out of themselves under him or they are not happy that he left and or with his replacement. They may also go because he is coaching a better club and they may be a better chance to play in a GF.

Congratulations to UNI on a fantastic year. They are a great bunch of blokes on and off the ground and to make the GF after getting pumped by 19 goals in the 1st final was a massive effort. A special mention to my mate Loopy. Wish you were still with us brother.

Some people on this forum need to get over this "money talks" crap. It's just an excuse for those who came up short. To have a crack at clubs because their players are not locals is ludicrous. How could I be local when i moved from VIC. Should I have not played because i'm not a local? Same as players from UNI who live close by and it is an easy choice??

At the end of the day we celebrated the flag like nothing else. As 22 mates who are now bonded for life. I'm proud to be an ECE premiership player. You can't buy what i won!

Firstly, guys have been leaving clubs for other ones in sydney for over 40 years. Once upon a time when Wests, Newtown & East Sydney had there own licenced clubs they were able to attract players from other Sydney teams as well as from interstate.

I dont believe it was as prevalent as it is these days but it still happened.

Looking at the top 3 teams this year East Coast, Wests & UNSW/ES they all recruited strongly.East Coast have an area that im sure they develop well while Wests and UNSW/ES traditionally arent strong junior areas and rely on recruiting from within the league and from interstate.

Next down was Penno who rely very heavily on there own juniors and it shows the premiership they won last year was quite remarkable with the amount of good locals they had.

Campbelltown was the next team in the 5 and they were boosted this year by a few SA recruits and there strong nucleus of juniors who had come through together.

I dont begrudge clubs for trying to strengthen there lists by recruiting players from other clubs. In this years GF there were 6 guys who have played with us at some stage(Garner, Wilson, Ward,Robbie, Underwood, Coulloupas) with Robbie and Ward being local juniors.

The thing that pisses me and im sure others off is the lack of support from "development" people in our area. We lost one of the above guys last year a few days AFTER Togs gave him his senior debut , his reason was for opportunity to play senior footy. He was driven to UNSW/ES training by the St George area development officer and played the whole season in 18's Challenge Cup.

Surely its a conflict of interest to be trying to develop kids for one area and then recruiting them for another club? When speaking to the league about what a senior club can do to enhance relationships and provide pathways to senior footy, i get the feeling that as long as Auskick numbers are good they couldnt give a flying @@@@ about senior footy.

I know in the past when i coached the 18's we tried to have information evenings for local juniors from the under 16's and were barred from contacting the kids due to "AFL privacy laws". Only to find out later that other SFL clubs had already contacted some of the kids and had got that info from the league?

If the League wants to even up the league and make it more competitive and not have the league in a few years time end up like the EPL, they need to do more to encourage development of local kids.

Spot on - Unfortunately the League has a very very queer way of what they view as local juniors in realtion to some clubs - Apparently Junior numbers in our zone are fantastic - pity that only three of this massive amount of juniors live within 20klms of Rosedale

Most live between 20 and 100k away and one of them lives in South Australia.

Include RAAF players, of which there were about 7, and a few recruits as well. You don't think this number is high?? Tell me what you would think to be a good number.

I was making a comparision you twit. I could say the same thing about Balmain, but it appears no-one on here cares about them either. Not being mean, just accurate... This argument does stem from junior football, and also the need to recruit from outside your area. Re-read the opening post.
