Sydney AFL Radio Show

My station manager and I are looking at establishing a Sydney AFL Radio Show and are currently looking at the feasibility of such a venture. Thought I would post on here to garner peoples thoughts on such a venture and whether you would listen , think it is worthwhile or have any ideas.

There are two options we are considering -

* First option would be to be on a community radio station , with a weekly podcast feature on the internet. Problem here is community radio stations are licensed to service their local area and many have limited range in regards to signal.

* Second option and most preferred option would be a metropolitan community station , however the problem here is although signal is sydney wide , you have to pay for air time , and thus would recquire sponsors for the program , and therefore we would be taking the proposal to NSW / ACT AFL and Sydney AFL to gain support , or perhaps we can gather external sponsors.

Format would be for a 1 hour show ( potentially 2hr..but would cost more) which would involve , news , preview weekends games , interviews with players/coaches , news on GWS , Sydney Swans and a little of AFL news , but would be more targeted to Sydney AFL league as opposed to general AFL show

At the moment the project is very much in its infancy , we are just doing a bit of research and trying to see what the response would be to such an idea.

We have had much success in the last few years working in a rival code and expanding the coverage of their sport which like the Sydney AFL does not recieve much coverage at all .

I would be asking AFL NSW/ACT what their audience is for the Sydney AFL Match of the Round. That'll give you a good gauge.

Would you be looking at exclusively Premier League content or reporting on all divisions and Under 18s?

The show would report on All divisions and U18's possibly even the 16's Zone Teams etc , obviously Premier League would be the focus but definetly would incorporate all clubs , divisions .

Would know more once we have an idea regarding length of the show ( possibly 1hr , possibly 2hr) , which ultimatally comes down to NSW AFL involvement and sponsors and whether the concept gets picked up

Good idea. The late Troy Garner did a similar show, and reported on here regulary a few years back. Go through the archives, you'll find a bit on it. As long as you involve all grades you should have a good following.

Excellent idea. Anything that promotes our league, and lets the public know there are options to play or get involved in our game, is a good thing.

Sounds like an excellent idea mate - anything we can do to promote the game even further would be fantastic. What would be even better would be if you and your station manager could also get a matchday live broadcast off the ground.

There was a Sydney AFL show on the radio about 10 years ago. No idea what station it was but i think it had Simon Kenny and Dave Barwick (Trusty) talking about the old SFL and SFA. Could be heard Sydney wide. Somebody on here will know what station it was.

Simon Kelly from Balmain, Helen Meyer from Saints as well had a gig on there. I remember tuning in on a saturday morning, and thursday nights I think, I was only about 13 at the time. I'll dig out an old footy record tonight and see what frequency it was.

Simon Kelly from Balmain, Helen Meyer from Saints as well had a gig on there. I remember tuning in on a saturday morning, and thursday nights I think, I was only about 13 at the time. I'll dig out an old footy record tonight and see what frequency it was.

I think it was 2SER FM from memory, can't remember the exact frequency but it was in the 91-92 range I think.

They were great programs, mainly used to talk about the SFL with a preview of the SFA games as well.

Certainly would be great to see something get off the ground again that was able to be heard Sydney wide.

BUT - I would not focus on the premier league. Based on the posts on RWO they are in the minority of interest. For whatever reason there is more interest in the lower levels and I believe this would be the case with a radio show and its listeners.

True, based on RWO posts the radio content would be bagging out ECE, bagging out Balmain (and cheap shots at Pekay if certain posters had a gig on the wireless).

Based on RWO?? Nothing should be based on RWO. It's a great forum for a laugh every now and then and to find out a few rumours that are flying around, but come on, there would be no more than 20 people that post here regularly.

I think some people from St George did a show also on a local st george station years ago from memory . Good to know that a show has been done before in the early 90's on a station we would target as a destination
