Good to see an award with Bob McConnell's name on it. Still don't know why they took his name away from the League Club Championship.

Five each grade plus club awards? Can't see that being too many. Although I'm probably not reading between the lines and am missing the message inside the message.

Congratulations to Dec and all the others winners in all grades.

There's nothing funny about losing your best Under 18s to Sydney Uni who will PAY for guns like Blake Guthrie.

Not many are as loyal as Dec and will chase the coin.

Well that says more about the individual than the club. Clubs only have so much money and its a hard balancing act to please everyone. If hes an 18 what should he be paid . Unless hes an absolute freak which i doubt otherwise he would be getting drafted. These young guys and their parents need to realise that the whole world doesnt revolve around each individual. I played with guys that had a year or two at the swans when there was reserves and come back to play SFL for 50 bucks a game. Im also very good mates with a guy who played at another club between playing AFL with the swans and won a Phelan Medal and was playing for his club for a 100 bucks a game and cant believe what these young blokes demand.Honestly its a sad situation what this has come too in the last 5 Years

Blake is a Swans Scholarship player and a good kid - he doesnt strike me as the type to chase money - he wouldnt have any problems playing senior footy at his age either.

Blake is not chasing $$ - he is chasing the dream of being an AFL Footballer

I have known him since he was 5 and coached him for 4 years

As for Sydney uni u/18's I hope they get promoted to the premier division

Yes they have 4 former St George juniors - the boys seem to be happy there

roscoe i am unaware of what is happening with blake, but can you explain to me why him leaving st george to play at sydney uni will help his AFL dream?

Considering our clubs record of having players drafted compared to Sydney Uni's i would of thought he would be better of staying with us.

Shearer - I have heard nothing about Blake leaving St George

As far as I am aware he is playing for the Dragons in 2010

Unaware if he has been offered anything by any other club

As for the St George boys playing for Sydney Uni - good luck to them

No doubt they would be welcome at Saints, but in the end it is their decision

This is the killer for mine, something no other club can offer. Knowing how tough it is to make an AFL list, going to Uni and studying something useful as well as playing and developing right under the nose of the Pie faithful, it's an easy each way bet and something not too many Under 18's (not to mention their parents) would knock back.
It's certainly not doing a lot for the stocks of U18 players in the other Inner City clubs.

... as much as they want to poach the best possible youngsters, I wouldn't think that Collingwood would have much interest in helping to develop a Swan's Scholarship holder!!!

It won't happen. I had the privilige of coaching Guthrie and a lot of the other Under 18s at St George who came from Ramsgate and they're a pretty tight group and more importantly, listeners and will heed the advice of their mentors.
